Ethereall transforms a serene ground-floor Bukit Timah condominium into a textural home that balances bold contrasts with timeless sophistication

Nestled within the serene enclave of Bukit Timah, this 2,130 sq ft ground-floor condominium has been transformed by interior design firm Ethereall into an artful retreat. Here, every corner is crafted to stand out on its own within a cohesively realised design concept.

The clients—a young family—were drawn to a sophisticated, darker palette, but wanted brighter, lighter touches for their children’s spaces. They engaged Ethereall to bring a fresh aesthetic to their home, marking a contrast from the predominantly white tones of their previous residence. Ethereall’s approach reimagines each room as a visual statement, crafted with intentionality and subtly infused with elegance.

From the onset, the Ethereall team, led by founder Hace Chua, faced the challenge of achieving harmony within layered textures while avoiding sensory overload. The result is a meticulously crafted environment where each room carries a distinct character, yet harmony is maintained throughout the home. This delicate balance is evident in key design elements—from a curvaceous ceiling in the living room to bespoke statement furnishings, each lending singular charm to the space.

The interplay of textures in this residence introduces a tactile depth to each room, blending form and function with refined artistry. One of the highlights is the feature wall in the living room, where carpentry, laminates and veneer finishes merge to form a striking visual centrepiece.

Here, multiple textures converge seamlessly, with veneered sections alongside matte and gloss-painted panels. This feature wall exemplifies Chua’s dedication to detail and her team’s craftsmanship, which required precise coordination among contractors to bring this layered vision to life.

As one moves through the home, the custom curve of the living room’s false ceiling stands as another marvel of thoughtful design. Initially planned as a standard wood ceiling, Chua envisioned it on-site to adapt to structural constraints. Now, the ceiling sweeps in a graceful curve, adding architectural dynamism to the room and complementing its dark, moody palette.

In keeping with the parents’ preference for darker tones, Chua selected bespoke furnishings and décor to enhance the space’s depth and sophistication. Among these pieces is the Moooi Heracleum III Linear suspension light, a delicate yet impactful statement that adds a biophilic touch, illuminating the dining area with a soft, organic glow.

Meanwhile, the master suite features the Poltrona Frau Volare Due bed, bringing a luxurious feel with its finely crafted leather and streamlined form. Attention to detail extends to even the smallest element—be it custom cabinetry with veneer detailing or carefully selected marble finishes in the bathrooms.

Each piece is curated to align with the family’s vision, balancing practical functionality with a cohesive visual design. The result is a residence that feels both elegant and grounded, one in which each element serves a purpose and enhances the overall aesthetic.

While visual impact was paramount, Chua ensured that comfort and ease of use were equally prioritised. She collaborated closely with the family to create spaces that accommodate their lifestyle, blending the parents’ refined, darker theme with lighter, wood-toned accents for the children’s rooms.

This balance is expressed through subtle wood features thoughtfully placed in areas frequented by the younger family members, preserving coherence without sacrificing individual style preferences.

Lighting was a central focus throughout, chosen carefully to create atmosphere and mood. “Lighting is the key,” says Chua, who incorporated warm ambient lighting throughout the home. A mix of statement fixtures and recessed lights ensures each room feels inviting and intimate—a perfect reflection of the family’s needs and aesthetic aspirations.
