A beautiful spread is enough to whet the appetite even before the first bite. “Decorating the table for a get-together definitely sets the mood and the vibe of the occasion,” explains celebrated local interior stylist Leona Panutat. “Not only does it serve as a lovely backdrop to the food, it also elevates the experience of your guests." Panutat, who describes home as an “extension of her personality”, is also the co-founder of Project Lilo, a mini-blog that gives its readers a glimpse of inspiring and accomplished women through candid conversations touching on topics such as raising children, marriage, work-life balance, and more.
However, nothing captures her heart more than setting the mood through a tablescape. “Nothing feels more hospitable than a satisfying meal paired with a beautifully set table,” she says. What’s the first thing that homeowners should consider when putting up a peaceful, tropical-themed table setting?
First decide if you’ll be hosting a sit-down dinner or a buffet. The latter choice frees up space at your table for more centrepieces and decorative tableware. The former, on the other hand, feels more intimate and lets the food take centre stage. Once you decide on which type of meal you will be serving, it’s time for the fun stuff!
What kinds of plates, cutlery and placemats would you put on a summer-themed table setup?
I can swing between two schools of thought: more is more and the simpler the better. With more is more, you achieve the wow factor, the drama, the excitement. And it is so much fun to employ! I mean, who wouldn’t want to be greeted with a spectacular looking table? What I like though about the simpler the better is that it’s a lot less intimidating for your guests.
I, for one, always set a simple table. While I can appreciate an elaborate setting, it’s just not me. I’m a very casual entertainer. I have to be; I’m a mum to two growing boys!
