“We call this space, The Gallery Apartment. Every room, corridor, and corner of the apartment is filled with art,” shares architect Edmund Ng. We’re standing in a lofty penthouse in Singapore’s waterfront condominium development Corals at Keppel Bay; the unit was recently redesigned by Ng for the developer Keppel Land, to help its future owner envision a charmed life in this art-influenced abode.

As part of the 4,725 sq ft unit’s major makeover, Ng and his team made art the focal point of various areas throughout the home to create an inspiring and inviting environment. “Art doesn’t only come in the traditional form of a painting. It can be a sculpture, a vase, or an everyday object that has been transformed into something meaningful to evoke your senses,” says Ng.

Together with his team at his eponymous firm Edmund Ng Architects, Ng crafted a beautiful interior befitting the “king-of-the-hill” location. “A penthouse sits at the highest point in any development—it’s the pinnacle of high living,” says Ng. “When we first visited this penthouse, our first impression was: ’Woah—[we had] an overwhelming awe of the potential in the unit’. The high ceilings, double volume space, the view to the waterway, and the fact that it is a duplex, means there was more space for us to express our creativity on this blank canvas.”

With their remarkable track record of having designed numerous beautiful penthouses around the island-state, the developer trusted thm to lead the creative direction, and allowed the firm free play with the design concept; the client’s main priority was for the design studio to realise the renovation within five months, which the team pulled off with much aplomb.

The firm selected a light-hued palette to brighten up the space, and also replaced the spessart oak wood cladding and orange-toned marble stone in the bathrooms with new materials to give the unit a more contemporary look. Light wood veneer and textured wallpapers were applied to the walls. The bathrooms were clad in natural stone tiles that include silver mink marble. Curtains and soft furnishings in a neutral scheme complete the plush look.

“We carefully selected unique textures, be they rough, smooth, warm, or cold. This not only enriches the visual experience of the user, but also elevates the overall sensory experience,” explains Ng.

The architect cites the open-plan living room as his favourite space to design—it makes a grand first impression not only with its lofty ceiling height but also the element of surprise involved with its introduction. Visitors are greeted by the sight of an understated entrance foyer before their eyes catch flow into the sight of the spacious living area.

A handsome dining area follows—here, a long 10-seater dining table holds court, and above it, the feather-like chandelier casts an enchanting glow to this entertainment area. Its nature-inspired influence is a beautiful contrast to the grid-like chandelier that is elegantly suspended above the living area.

“In a good design, the space not only needs to be engaging on what the eye can perceive but also need to stimulate our other senses,” surmises the architect.
