From courtroom to kitchen, Singaporean lawyer Melissa Peh breaks bread and discusses how she takes inspiration from her mother; fellow lawyer, Susan Peh. Over the most perfect pavlova, she also fawns about her love for Gaggenau’s timeless design and uncompromised performance

When it comes to the mummy-and-me dynamic, no mother and daughter duo are quite as compelling as Susan and Melissa Peh. Both notable Singaporean lawyers, the two share more than just courtroom confessions, but also recipes that bind generations in the kitchen.

“My passion for cooking first began when I was a child,” muses Melissa Peh. “I was intrigued by the sights, sounds and aroma of cooking in the kitchen. When I was studying in London, my passion for cooking grew. When you’re studying abroad and on your own, you are forced to cook your own meals through all seasons. I remember searching for recipes online and being amazed by the huge selection of recipes and endless permutations of cooking ingredients, styles and plating.”

“But my first memory of food is actually desserts and cakes! They must have left a deep impression on me. Mum’s homemade jellies, trifles, cookies and most of all, pretty birthday cakes that she would design and order for our birthdays were always wonderful treats,” shares the young lawyer.

And when it comes to her own downtime, this dutiful daughter enjoys losing herself in the kitchen and actually making treats.

“I enjoy making desserts for friends and family because they often evoke happy memories,” confesses Peh. “Pavlova is one such happy dessert. I love how it is crisp outside and soft and airy inside and how the fragrance, colours and flavour of fruits on top remind me of my childhood birthday cakes.”

“To this day, I love creating desserts with my Mum,” she adds. “We have the same taste and style so it is always fun. In fact, she inspired me to read Law and become a lawyer. She’s convinced me that it is possible to embark on a successful legal career while juggling with my own hobbies and dreams.”

But sometimes, work commitments get the best of her. “I would love to cook more often and experiment with dishes. However, it is tough when I am working full time. So I usually end up cooking on special occasions,” she declares. “And when I do cook, I use my Gaggenau oven to bake, roast, grill, or simply to heat up food. I definitely look forward to more baking and experimentation. Their ovens are simple to use, they heat up fast and cook deliciously.”

An existing ardent fan of Gaggenau, Peh further maintains, “I really love Gaggenau for being truly a work of art in the kitchen—it has a stylish, contemporary and seamless design, while maintaining the highest standards of functionality, performance and safety. It is a dream appliance for every kitchen.”
