Luzerne’s SG60 Diamond Collection tells the Singapore story, while supporting charitable causes with a focus on mental health

As Singapore celebrates six decades of independence, Luzerne unveils the SG60 Diamond Collection: a commemorative series marking the country’s journey in porcelain. Designed by Singaporean watercolourist, associate professor Ng Woon Lam of NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media, each piece channels national milestones into timeless everyday wares. But this is more than just a tableware launch, as Luzerne also aims to raise $600,000 for charitable causes focusing on mental health support.

Charting history

Founded as Hiap Huat Pottery in 1947, Luzerne has grown from a family-run business into a global tableware brand rooted in Singaporean identity. Evolving alongside the nation, the brand translates each milestone into commemorative pieces that trace Singapore’s journey—from kampongs to playgrounds to smart cities. These stories come together in the SG60 Diamond Collection.

It comprises three consumer pieces: the 30cm SG60 Singapura plate, the 16cm SG60 Singapura six-plate set, and the SG60 Kopi set.  Each piece features one of Ng’s six illustrations, representing a decade of the Singapore story—from post-independence resilience to digital innovation.

Design in use

Taking centre stage is the limited-edition 50cm SG60 Diamond plate, not for sale but donated for charity

fundraising. Each features a collage of all six milestone illustrations, housed in a premium gift box with a custom stand and commemorative booklet. Through Community Chest Singapore, Luzerne will fundraise for ten plates, with a minimum donation of $2,688.

All proceeds will support the President’s Challenge, The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, Samaritans of Singapore, and Limitless. In appreciation of their generous support, the top 10 donors will each receive a SG60 Diamond Plate. The remaining plates will be allocated to social service agencies for their own fundraising efforts. Luzerne aims to raise $600,000 from all 60 plates.

“This initiative is deeply personal to me,” says CEO Elaine Lek, who co-founded the youth suicide-prevention movement PleaseStay. “We want to raise awareness and break the stigma around youth mental health.” The plate, she says, represents a message of hope.

Craft and community

Ng’s illustrations chart Singapore’s journey through the years, with scenes like the Esplanade and the Botanic Gardens’ Unesco listing. Ng, a Dolphin Fellowship awardee of the American Watercolour Society, brings a distinct visual language rooted in calligraphy and Taiji philosophy.

His brush strokes capture more than national moments; they reflect the heart of the nation’s people. “Porcelain is quiet, but not passive,” says Ng. “It holds memory.”

During his residency at Luzerne’s factory in Dehua, China—birthplace of Blanc de Chine—Ng observed how his brushwork translated from paper to porcelain. The pieces are bone ash-free, halal-certified, and produced with precision by dedicated artisans. What he finds most rewarding is seeing his watercolour strokes emerge through Luzerne’s firing technique, resulting in a soft, sepia-toned  effect that carries the warmth of   ink and memory.

Whether gifted, used or displayed, the SG60 Diamond Collection represents design with depth: a keepsake of meaning,   made with heart.
