Transforming ceiling fans into elegant design statements that cater to the dynamic needs of today’s affluent, design-conscious market, Spin and Crestar’s Jerald Tew redefines functional luxury for modern interiors

Ceiling fans have come a long way from their purely utilitarian origins, and leading this transformation in Singapore is Jerald Tew. As the second-generation owner of Spin and Crestar, two of Singapore’s premier ceiling fan brands, Tew has reimagined these everyday fixtures as sophisticated design centrepieces.

Building on Crestar’s legacy of durability and performance, founded by his father Eric Tew in 2004, Tew launched Spin in 2014, catering to a more discerning, design-conscious clientele. Spin, with its minimalist “neckless” fan typology, set a new standard in functional aesthetics, soon becoming a much-imitated icon in luxury interiors.

The year 2024 is a landmark year for the brands, as Crestar celebrates its 20th anniversary and Spin turns 10. These milestones coincide with the debut of Tew’s most ambitious project yet: the Crestar and Spin Fans Experiential Lab.

With bold plans for a new showroom at Bendemeer and an encore collaboration with Prestige Global Designs in 2025, Tew is poised to take his brands to even greater heights.

When Tew identified a gap in the market for ceiling fans that could meet the aesthetic demands of upscale interiors, he seized the opportunity to innovate. “Homeowners want more than just functionality—they want design,” he explains. Spin was born as a high-end offshoot of Crestar, a brand already renowned for its reliable and high-performance fans.

It brought a fresh perspective to the industry, delivering sleek designs and customisable finishes that allowed ceiling fans to seamlessly integrate into luxury interiors. The journey was not without its challenges. “Creating a new design is always complex,” Tew admits. “But seeing it come to life in someone’s home is incredibly rewarding.”

Spin’s sleek, minimalist designs quickly gained traction among affluent homeowners, as well as architects and interior designers. This evolution transformed the humble ceiling fan into a design focal point, combining visual allure with technical sophistication.

Tew’s dedication to customisation has resulted in unique creations, including a Ferrari-red fan for an overseas client. “After working with the client to match the exact hex colour code, we collaborated with the factory to bring it to life,” he recalls. “The end result was a stunning piece that the client loved.” This project exemplifies Tew’s commitment to blending creativity with precision, setting Spin apart in the industry.

Adding to his story of innovation is a serendipitous meeting with interior designer Jeremy Tay, co-founder of boutique firm Prestige Global Designs at the Tatler Homes Design Awards. Their shared vision for design excellence sparked a collaboration that ultimately culminated in the experiential lab, a space that redefines how ceiling fans are perceived.

The Crestar and Spin Fans Experiential Lab, located in Tampines North, is no ordinary showroom. Conceptualised by Prestige Global Designs, the 2,700 sq ft space showcases Spin and Crestar fans within luxurious, home-inspired environments. Each area—from an airy kitchen to an opulent bedroom—embodies a harmonious marriage of style and functionality.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a dramatic, fan-shaped entryway with fluted bronze panels and dynamic LED lighting. This leads to a series of curated spaces designed to show how Spin and Crestar fans can transform interiors.

One standout feature in the lab is the gourmet kitchen, where white-hued fans hover above a sculptural kitchen island inspired by the form of a fan blade, creating a striking visual effect.

On the second floor of the experiential lab, visitors can explore material and colour options, while vintage fans installed above the meeting room table inject charm and character. From the smallest details, such as fluted bronze accents, to the expansive layouts, this zone exudes luxury while keeping functionality at its core.

Looking ahead, Tew’s ambitions reflect his relentless drive for innovation. The new flagship showroom in Bendemeer, set to open next year, promises to build upon the success of the experiential lab. This repeat collaboration with Prestige Global Designs will further elevate the customer experience by blending community-focused spaces with a series of interactive design elements.

Tew is also keen on expanding his brands globally, aiming to introduce Spin’s design-forward philosophy to international markets. “Our goal is to evolve our brand into something more intuitive and personalised,” Tew says. “We want to deepen our understanding of user needs while offering a touch of Singapore’s design ethos to the world.”

His vision for Spin and Crestar extends beyond their functionality, transforming ceiling fans into statements of luxury and innovation. As he continues to push boundaries, Tew is redefining what it means to combine style with utility, proving that even the simplest of home fixtures can be reimagined as works of art.
