These ethereal furniture pieces evoke entrancing nebular shapes

Since time immemorial, furniture has been about straight lines and hard angles. This has been the case in recent years until modern sensibilities have fostered a profound appreciation for design’s organic and sculptural aspects. Once a trademark in mid-century homes, curved and round furniture comes back in full glory.

Here, we round up a list of pieces that tread away from the usual boxy, industrialised designs; opting instead for furnishings that scream comfort and relaxation.

The inspiration for this print—a combination of personified suns and stylised architecture, both typical of Fornasetti—is the island of Capri. Created by Porto Fornasetti in the Fifties, Sole Di Capri was conjured from his imagination, before ever having visited the legendary 18 island.

Designed by Dima Loginoff, the Cloudy suspension lamp resembles a luminous sculpture, radiating a gentle and inviting glow. A single piece is straight out of a daydream, composed of five spherical elements of varying dimensions clustered within a semi-transparent elastic fabric. The design plays with an asymmetrical arrangement of its parts, using separate levels and components of volumes and light diffusions to create a unique and inviting feast for the eyes.

The unique design pays homage to both architectural tradition and contemporary inclination, apparent with its ethereal curves and elegant composition. Hayon rendered the arch’s disciplined concept to create a more organic and fluid appearance, which will seamlessly complement any chic living space.

This artwork by Hee Chan Kim, a Parsons School of Design faculty member, is a unique and serene addition to any home. In an interview with The New School, he says, “As an artist who lives in the world where anything can be 3D printed, I want to find the meaning of the act of making and recover our intimate relationship with nature [as material]. As a vessel-like form, it represents us as a human
being. The tactile nature of my work originated from the desire for non-verbal communication as an Asian immigrant. I want my work to be quiet but loud at the same time.”

This Kuschel rug available in two versions allowed Salem van der Swaagh her first collaboration with Tacchini. For her, it is a love letter to wool—expanding on the idea of weaving as a means of communicating and connecting with the surrounding environment, a practical and poetic, ancient and sustainable means, thanks to the human spirit which finds one of its purest and most genuine expressions in the art.

The Tobi-Ishi outdoor table is the ideal choice for your next al fresco brunch hour. Drawing its name from polished stones traditionally used in Japanese gardens for ornamentation, the table epitomises tranquillity and modernity. The vertical trapezoidal bases are set at right angles to create a sturdy sculptural form. Its shape seems to morph depending on the viewing angle, arduously crafted from cement to enhance durability and appeal in outdoor settings.
