Colin Seah of Ministry of Design (MOD) explains the design inspiration behind the Garden table, a limited edition piece crafted in collaboration with Spanish surfaces giant Cosentino Group
For many city dwellers that have adapted to working from home, gardening has become one of our new favourite pastimes. And if you’re one such urbanite, this sleek design from Cosentino offers you ample reason to celebrate your love of plants. Created in collaboration with Spanish surfaces manufacturer Cosentino Group, the Garden table is the brainchild of Colin Seah, founder and design director of Singapore-based multidisciplinary firm Ministry of Design (MOD).

Inspired by the growing importance of nature in our homes, this desk incorporates a vessel designed for a large house plant, and is matched with a 2.4m by 1.2m countertop featuring the Dekton Kraftizen Umber, a durable compact surface available from Cosentino. The table top’s chamfered edges are supported by three sustainably-sourced Balau timber table legs that come with bronze-tinted metal caps. “The Garden table recalls the carefree spirit of being outdoors on a sun-drenched summer’s day,” says Seah, commenting on the design inspiration for the table.
The designer picked the Dekton Kraftizen Umber for its terracotta-like hue, which complements the verdant intention of this desk. Each table is made to order and is available exclusively at Cosentino City Singapore, the brand’s new flagship that’s located in Marina One. “Inspired by the gorgeous hand-hewn textures and warm earth tones of Kraftizen Umber, the Garden table provides a conceptual mise en scene: a backdrop to enjoy the restorative spirit of the outdoors and nature, whilst being indoors.”
Adds Seah: “As a spatial designer, the materials I choose play a significant role in shaping the experiences I create. The soothing earthy red tones of Kraftizen Umber readily provide a welcome sense of refuge and wellness, which I feel we all need in our current unprecedented times.”
