If you are looking for a piece of furniture that is also a work of art with a price tag to match, this version of the Tobi-Ishi B&B Italia table, available from Space Furniture, is the holy grail of statement tables. First launched in 2012, the sculptural table takes its namesake from the stepping stones—tobi-ishi in Japanese—found in Japanese garden ponds.

Commemorating the design’s 10th anniversary in 2022, it was reissued in a limited edition of 500 in strips of solid white Carrara marble and deep green Alpi marble. The juxtaposition of the minimalist shapes and the marble stripes’ graphic contrast command attention. Yet it retains its versatility as it would work well in a maximalist interior set up as well as playing a leading role—a solo show, really—in a minimalist interior. Truly, a table with main character energy, if ever there was one.

I’ve always been a fan of ambient lighting and minimalist designs, so this Jean-Marie Massaud creation hits all the right notes for me. The elegant lantern-shaped design is made from “Stainedpla,” a refined pleated material that embraces the light source in the most delicate manner, and it’s lightweight to be carried around when I want to feel like a Victorian-era woman heading to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

I also like the subtle touch of the audio feature with classical tunes from Bach, Chopin, and Schubert, as well as an engraving of Massaud’s poetic words at the base of the lamp: “La vie est une aventure faite de rencontres comme autant de lumières,” which translates to “life is an adventure made of encounters, each like a light.”

“Basket-weaving, wood-carving, panning and smithing of gold and silver, tattooing, weaving textile on a loom - these are deep traditions among the Filipino Igorots in the Cordillera mountains. The Joana tray in Mark Wilson’s collection is inspired by these still-living practices.”

For my editor’s pick, I have chosen Mark Wilson’s beautiful round copper “bilao” style trays. This piece is a reimagined metallic rendition of a traditional Filipino serving plate usually made with leaves and or natural fibres, “striving to keep the pliability of the original plant version”.

This plate is used for feasts and gatherings in the Philippines, it is a piece that is in a sense, disposable as the fibers used are usually thin. What makes Wilson’s special is that he turned a disposable item into something that is longer lasting. “The metal is milled into a sheet, then cut into strips, then woven by hand as if they were still the original plant material. This is a basket-weaving technique transposed into precious metals.”

For wine and design lovers, Dior’s carafes are ideal gifts. Take this exquisite hand-blown crystal carafe adorned with an intricate lily of the valley motif. This motif symbolises luck and renewal; to me, with the new year just around the corner, it's a great omen.

A treasure for the discerning host or design lover, who can use it to serve fine wines or as a decorative object, this carafe marries style and substance—and elevates any celebration at home.

The Carl Hansen & Søn CH78 Lounge Chair, fondly known as "Mama Bear," returns in a sublime new iteration for its platinum anniversary. First conceived by Danish master Hans J. Wegner in 1954, this piece debuts in 2024, draped in a specially commissioned wool upholstery that speaks to contemporary sensibilities while honouring its midcentury roots.

The new Umber colourway, drawing from nature's earthen palette, transforms this classic design into a meditation on modern comfort. Once revolutionary in 1954, its enveloping curves feel remarkably prescient today—offering a sanctuary-like embrace that beckons one home. With this edition, Carl Hansen & Søn proves that true design, like a warm embrace, never goes out of style.

As my choice for the ultimate Christmas gift, this chair transcends mere furniture—it's a daily ritual waiting to happen and a timeless piece that brings enduring comfort to the everyday.
