Veteran interior designer Ed Ong shares some wisdom on how to level up your space with rugs and lighting courtesy of his latest venture, M Luxury Asia

As a seasoned industry professional with over 100 successful interior makeovers to his name, Ed Ong is well-versed in the art of creating good-looking spaces. The founder of Dwell Interior Design has worked on both local and overseas homes, and was also the first Asian designer appointed to oversee the design of luxury European furniture fittings brand Blum’s showrooms across Southeast Asia.

Given Ong’s keen appreciation for well-composed interiors and quality furnishings, it was a natural progression for him to establish his latest venture, M Luxury Asia, in 2018. The firm is the official distributor for prestigious British carpet maker Riviere Rugs and storied Italian lighting brand Barovier & Toso in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia; the two brands occupy the upper echelons of their respective categories in the luxury furnishings sector.

Ong operates the showrooms for both brands across two levels at 1 Nassim Road, with each brand given its own dedicated floor to showcase its covetable creations to the fullest effect. Incidentally, the Barovier & Toso Singapore outpost was the very first overseas mono-brand showroom for the Italian firm.

Ong’s aim is for each brand to resonate with a discerning clientele. “Customers who appreciate the story of the brand, the craftsmanship, and the result of their passion in creating something,” he explains. “There are many choices out there, at different price points, but I think you would buy from the brands that we carry because they represent a high degree of craftsmanship.”

Light the Way

“My main aim was to bring in Barovier & Toso, one of the world’s oldest brands in any sector,” declares Ong of his reason for launching M Luxury Asia. “The brand did not have a physical presence outside Italy, only a network of dealers. It deserved to be recognised in its own [retail] space.”

Headquartered in Murano Island, Italy, Barovier & Toso was founded in 1295 as a family-run business. The firm soon captured the world’s attention with its innovative glassmaking techniques and stellar craftsmanship, resulting in remarkably intricate chandeliers that set the standard for luxury lighting fixtures around the world.

Barovier & Toso lighting fixtures are fitted in various designer boutiques and high-end hotels throughout the world, and grace the homes of royalty and celebrities. The brand offers bespoke lighting installations, or clients can choose from its roster of beautiful lamps.

Each chandelier makes a unique design statement, from the spirally arranged Spinn model and the intricate, jellyfish-like Exagon installation to the delicate, flower-like Vallonne and the just-launched, 1960s-influenced Punk designed by Roberto Lazzeroni. “The newer models are very progressive and forward in concept, yet still keep very faithful to the age-old Murano glassblowing and glassmaking techniques,” says Ong.

Cosy Up

As important as a chandelier can be in adding a sculptural element to an interior, a good rug can play an equally vital role in grounding the look of a space. Founded in 2005, Riviere Rugs uses only the finest-grade hand-carded and hand-spun Tibetan wool and Chinese silk in the making of its handcrafted rugs at its workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Each rug is woven by hand with a minimum of 100 knots per square inch; “a normal-sized rug for the living room would take four weavers working side by side four to six months to finish,” says Ong, lending some context to the complexity of this rug-making process and the durability of the end product.

“Rugs are tricky,” he adds. “They can make a statement, but they cannot be distracting or overpowering.” To their credit, Riviere rugs are subtle in design, which adds an understated yet stylishly luxurious touch to any interior. Customers can choose from a range of distinctive collections, featuring singular designs inspired by everything from picturesque landscapes and abstract impressionist patterns to hand-torn paper collage techniques. “The unique thing is that all the pieces are designed by the company founder, Leo Riviere, himself,” reveals Ong.

“Singapore homeowners’ tastes are quite varied: some want a modern classic look, and some others go for a modern contemporary aesthetic,” shares Ong, offering his take on the local design preferences he has observed in recent years. “The brands that we carry have exceptional products that would beautifully complement, if not define, a modern classic or a modern contemporary interior.”
