In the interior design realm, there is standard luxury, and then there is luxury that goes beyond. Standard luxury refers to spaces that are designed with premium materials, high-quality finishes, and dressed with costly furnishings. Much of it has to do with tangible objects.
As for luxury that goes beyond, well, that’s standard luxury levelled up–the domain of the intangible. Here, luxury is defined by spatial qualities: The exquisite proportions of a room; the quality of light in the space; the interplay of shadow and light; the emotional response it elicits.
For Singapore design studio Architology, which strives to create environments that surpass standard luxury, those qualities are reflected in its guiding principles of Space, Spirit, Sense and Surroundings. An Architology project is one that embodies thoughtful design, mindful spirit, and a heightened sensory connection with the surroundings.
Established in 2010 by Terrence Quah and Bu Shukun, the award-winning practice has been honing its craft since day one. Four recent residential projects encapsulate the firm’s design ethos: A condominium and a detached house on mainland Singapore, and two condominiums in Sentosa Cove.

Space

This mature condominium in Bukit Timah is known for its spacious apartments and split-level living spaces, which are symbolic of a bygone era.
When asked to update the apartment, Architology chose to celebrate this distinctive feature rather than disguise or conceal it. Individual staircases were connected to form a single, large, U-shaped staircase that created the impression of an amphitheatre.
With the living room and balcony oriented towards views of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the open amphitheatre-like structure allows occupants to enjoy the apartment’s best qualities, while also facilitating visual contact with each other in the living-dining-kitchen area.
Spirit
The owners of this detached house in Bukit Timah are wine lovers and collectors.

The owners of this detached house in Bukit Timah are wine lovers and collectors. In a gesture of openness, warmth and hospitality, Architology carved out a wine cellar in the centre of the living-dining area so that the owners could welcome and entertain their guests.
To create a framework for this glass-walled centrepiece, the designers used a palette of dark timber veneers throughout the living-dining area, plus wall finishes that resemble a natural rock formation. This heightened the illusion of a wine cave.
Several other design elements in the scheme also pay tribute to nature, such as the spiral staircase and the pebble-like pendant lights above the dining table.

Sense
In this apartment in Sentosa Cove, Architology sought to create a space that exudes a sense of luxurious calmness.

The quiet luxury aesthetic hit the mainstream in 2023 and was trending for a while, but its appeal is timeless. In this apartment in Sentosa Cove, Architology sought to create a space that exudes a sense of luxurious calmness, with an emphasis on simplicity and sophistication.
By using a refined palette of neutral tones and high-quality materials, as well as soft accent colours to bring out subtle details, the designers were able to forge an understated atmosphere. With such an ambiance, the impact is more sensorial than visual.
Surroundings
Thanks to its enviable location at the southernmost tip of Sentosa Cove, this penthouse unit boasts a 270-degree panorama of the South China Sea.

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, the custom-designed rugs, artwork, choice of colours and fibre-optic stars on the ceiling of the apartment draw one into the sense of being among the surrounding seascape.
Architology’s design intent was to fashion the interior space as a vessel in which to experience the world, allowing its occupants to drift through the water with a canopy of stars above.
