A sanctuary of calm, this apartment by Intheory Design blends architecture with its surroundings—where warm, organic elements complement the lush, verdant landscape
Emphasising the integration of natural elements into the built environment, biophilic design seeks to promote a sense of peace and well-being amid the urban cityscape. This 980 sq ft apartment, located within the Silversea condominium complex in Marine Parade, is one such example by Intheory Design.
Rooted in the essence of an “oasis retreat”, the residence embodies a soothing tranquillity through the considered integration of lush greenery and natural elements that foster a connection to nature and evoke feelings of restorative calm.
The owners had sought a cohesive abode that reflects their lifestyle and tastes while fostering a serene and inviting atmosphere, and enlisted Intheory Design to bring their dream home to life. Led by Ellba Tang, co-founder of the interior design firm, the team prioritised functionality, aesthetics and personalisation, completing the project in just two months.

Biophilic Influences
With its expansive garden view as a central focal point, a key design principle adopted by Intheory Design was to blur the boundaries between the indoors and out, bringing the beauty of the natural surroundings into the heart of the home. Generous openings, strategically positioned reflective surfaces and nature-inspired textures work together to facilitate an effortless spatial flow—emphasising the harmony between architecture and landscape.

Warm and cosy
“Drawing inspiration from nature, the homeowners expressed a preference for a warm and organic palette, incorporating rich wood finishes and earthy tones,” shares Tang. Natural materials were carefully selected to amplify tactile richness and reinforce their strong connection to the outdoors. Rich wood finishes and terrazzo flooring not only add texture and depth, but also contribute to a timeless, sophisticated sensibility. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, furnishings were selected for their durability and practicality, ensuring the space remains both beautiful and functional over time.
“They were especially mindful of maintenance requirements, preferring materials that were easy to clean and resistant to wear over time,” Tang elaborates. The Intheory Design team utilised a layered approach when it came to lighting; thoughtfully placed recessed fixtures ensure a seamless, uncluttered ceiling. Integrated cabinetry lighting provides subtle illumination to highlight focal areas, while wall sconces and warm ambient lighting further enrich the mood, creating a homely, welcoming ambience.
Curves ahead
A standout feature is the arched, green-tiled backsplash in the kitchen—a striking focal point that infuses the space with depth and character. The textured green tiles bring a tactile, organic quality, offering a refreshing contrast to the earthy wood finishes. The arch softens the geometry of the kitchen, echoing the use of curved elements such as the rounded edges of the kitchen island, cabinetry and dining table, as well as the gentle material transitions. These subtle curves collectively introduce warmth, fluidity and visual continuity throughout the space.
Balancing act
One of the primary challenges in this project was to optimise the apartment’s compact layout to achieve both functionality and a sense of openness. “Careful planning [was required] to prevent the space from feeling cramped while maintaining an efficient flow. Innovative storage solutions were essential to maximise usability without compromising aesthetics,” says Tang. The master bathroom, for example, was designed with an open-concept layout and enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass panels to make the space feel equal parts expansive and private. The thoughtful layout ensures that each zone—the vanity, shower, and toilet—remains visually connected, yet functionally distinct.
Here, a carefully curated palette of materials strikes a perfect balance between comfort and elegance. Similar to the kitchen backsplash, the space is adorned with deep green tiles and rich wood finishes. Smooth marble surfaces and brushed gold fixtures add a layer of refined luxury. Completing the spa-like atmosphere, a stone-clad step-down shower featuring an immersive rain shower system invites moments of rejuvenation and indulgence. This calibrated balance continues with the seamless integration of abundant natural light with essential privacy: “While glass elements were incorporated to enhance openness and light distribution, maintaining privacy in crucial areas required thoughtful design interventions, including strategic placement, [careful] material selection, and the application of [appropriate] treatments or finishes.” In this inviting abode, a harmonious blend of materials and design elements fosters restful tranquillity, enhancing cosiness and artistic allure throughout the home.
