Anyone itching to find out who will be shaping Hong Kong for the future needed cast their gazes no further than the Rosewood Hong Kong’s Pavilion Hall on October 6, when Gen.T held its highly anticipated Leaders of Tomorrow event

Hong Kong’s most innovative entrepreneurs gathered for an effervescent and enlightening evening to celebrate the honourees on the Gen.T List 2022.

Welcomed by a fevered flurry of flashing by Tatler’s senior photographer and resident magic-maker Affa Chan, Gen.T honourees from past and present toasted the inauguration of 32 new honourees from Hong Kong—and a total of 300 across Asia—including Sidhant Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Clearbot, Olivia Chan, co-founder and CEO of BeautyFact, and Terence Hon co-founder of GreenPrice, who were all featured on Tatler Hong Kong’s October cover.

Once guests were seated, comedian and emcee Vivek Mahbubani underlined what a joy it was to be congregating in person once again: “Let me remind you that tonight there is no ‘leave meeting’ button and there’s no screen that’s buffering; we’re here in person and it gives me so much pleasure to be here with you all.”

Sponsored by Credit Suisse, Gen.T’s regional headline sponsor for the fourth year in a row, as well as Le Labo, Hennessy and Armand de Brignac and destination partner Hong Kong Tourism Board, the night was a celebration of Asia’s most promising entrepreneurs who have worked hard over the last 18 months to bring innovative, sustainable, creative and compassionate ideas to the region.

“Looking out into the room right now, I’m reminded why being part of this community is such a buzz,” said Lee Williamson, Gen.T’s regional editorial director. In an onstage address, he laid down the facts: “Our 2022 list of honourees across Asia has a total of 16 unicorn founders and the disclosed funding raised over the last 18 months by this year’s honourees is just shy of US$6 billion,” he said to roaring applause, before shouting out familiar faces in the audience, including previous honourees Tommie Lo, Dee Dee Chan and Aaron Lee.

After dinner was served, it was time for the Gen.T x Credit Suisse Social Impact Awards, which recognise Gen.T honourees who are using technology to create positive impact at scale. This year’s 12 recipients from around the region ranged from a sustainability pioneer in Malaysia who is rolling out reverse vending machines that collect materials to be recycled to a fintech leader in Thailand making financial services more accessible.

Benjamin Cavalli, Credit Suisse’s head of wealth management for Asia-Pacific and the region's sustainability leader, announced the 2022 winners via video. “The world has changed dramatically in the last three years,” he said. “We have seen a pivotal shift, with next-generation leaders becoming more purpose-driven and motivated to create positive change across the entire ecosystem. It’s heartening to see young entrepreneurs and leaders exploring out-of-the-box ideas to build scalable solutions that are impacting communities and lives.”

Out of the 12 winners, Jessica Liu, a founding member of AI financial manager Planto, received the award on behalf of co-founder Ankit Suri, who was in India at the time of the event.

The evening also served as an opportunity for the Gen.T team to share their upcoming plans, including Gen.T Disrupt, a collaboration with ed-tech entrepreneur Timothy Yu's company Sofasoda to create a series of classes to train the next generation of entrepreneurs. Four courses have already been launched in Taiwan, with a first course planned for Hong Kong in early 2023.

The Gen.T Asia Summit, an innovation and ideas festival for entrepreneurs, creatives and young professionals, will follow in May 2023.

The evening ended with this year’s honourees posing on stage with their personalised Gen.T magazine covers and swapping contact details with other members of the community. With smiles all around, the evening was a friendly reminder of the immense power and sense of purpose present in the city.
