This modern Filipino restaurant was just awarded one Michelin Star

As the only Filipino tasting menu experience in Chicago, Kasama has turned heads since its inception in 2020. It was recognised on the 2021 New York Times Restaurant List for "the 50 places [they are] most excited about," and has proudly collected praises from publications throughout the United States, and globally too.

Their biggest milestone yet has just arrived: its first-ever Michelin star! A wonderful moment for the country as we proudly celebrate Kasama's success and the development of Filipino cuisine on the world stage.

This contemporary Filipino restaurant and bakery infuses a fresh perspective on what it means to serve Philippine cuisine. From café fare, bakery treats, to a 13-course tasting menu featured from Thursdays to Saturdays, the husband and wife dynamic duo behind Kasama (chefs Genie Kwon and Timothy Flores) truly practice what they preach: the desire to elevate and celebrate Filipino flavours.

“The dinner tasting, which is an evolution of their wildly popular café, reflects their training, experience and heritage. Naturally, the result is an ambitious, clever and distinct meal, where traditional Filipino food is given a creative spin in such items as maitake mushroom adobo with mussel emulsion; "pancit" reflecting Spanish influence with Serrano ham; and an elegant take on "halo-halo" combining Asian pear granita, pandan ice cream and freeze-dried mandarin,” shared the Michelin Guide.

In recent years, more attention has been paid to Filipino gastronomy, local produce, and talent. This achievement is nothing short of a beautiful nod to the bright future ahead along the Philippines’s storied culinary path.

“It is still hard to believe what this industry has been through since the beginning of 2020. To make it here and to be recognised by the @michelinguide is truly beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our team, past and present. Thank you to our wonderful patrons. Cheers to you all,” the restaurant shared on Instagram.
