Welcome to Foodie Finds! This is an article series by Tatler, chronicling where and what to order according to the food-obsessed.

I myself have never understood non-foodies. How can one not love flavours, spices, aromas and all the cultural nuances and memories that come with every bite? Dining is an experience meant to be savoured and is even more fun when shared with loved ones. Dining around a table means sharing, conversing, bonding and learning. A dish can tell you so much about a person, a culture, and a country. It speaks volumes of a nation's history and is an art form on its own. Skilled hands are trained over years or are born out of pure passion and practice. Professional chefs and home cooks alike, from young stars to grandmothers, have been cooking up meals filled with emotion and have truly made us foodies, happy.

Through Foodie Finds, we ask our epicurean friends to share their favourites. In this feature, we tackle takeout and delivery. Hear what entrepreneur and classically trained chef Jen Gerodias Slagle has to say. Before the pandemic and pre-founding Casa Luisa, Slagle trained in Paris, trained at top restaurants around the globe, was a culinary instructor in San Francisco and even co-founded a consulting company to help launch a variety of F&B concepts in the Philippines.

Of her favourite take-out spots in the country, Slagle had this to share, "Here, I gravitate towards brands with the same philosophy and passion I have with Casa Luisa– small batch production, meticulous with ingredients and their process and specialising in a specific form of artisanal craft. I love these brands because I know they love what they do (most are dear friends) and you can taste that in their products. Another very important qualification for my picks would be that they’re something my kids and I love!"

Tuesday Bake

@tuesdaybake

They make the real deal American style bakery muffins. They use a whole-wheat and flaxseed mix which makes these muffins a lot more wholesome and guilt-free. Their flavours are classics with a playful twist like their banana granola, calamansi vanilla and Honey butter corn muffins. They also keep longer in the refrigerator and are very easy to reheat for a quick breakfast or snack.

Gyozilla Manila

@gyozillamnl

Their pork and chive gyoza, vegan shiitake and squash gyoza and ebi fry are a must in our freezers. They use good ingredients and produce in small batches, which is key to any kind of dumpling making. They’re full-flavoured and make use of bold aromatics like ginger and chives which makes you appreciate each artfully folded dumpling. My kids also love their branding which makes them even love the vegan variety!

Kurimu

@kurimu.ph

Kurimu is a premium handcrafted ice cream that produces ice cream daily with a very Japanese palette. We love that they have bold flavour combinations which just make sense like their caramel shoyu, black sesame and kinako chocolate. The texture of their ice cream is also amazing–rich but light at the same time. You don’t have to eat a whole lot to get your ice cream fix which is really what you want from any dessert.

Group and Boiler

@groupandboiler

Group and Boiler's bottled cold brew is something that I stock up in my refrigerator. They use their house-blend which consists of Ethiopia and Colombia Arabica beans which have been steeped for 14 hours. It just has the right balance of body and natural sweetness. It’s so good with lots of ice with macadamia nut milk which is perfect for this weather.

Gourmet Corner

@gourmetcornerph

It’s just impossible to step out of Gourmet Corner without buying your staples and trying out new items in their glorious store at San Antonio Plaza. I always buy their frozen truffle siomai, Har Gaw, various regional longanisa, Stanford and shaw ginger ale and my favourite Cunanan Bakery ensaymadas!

These are the amazing farmers who were able to grow the first locally farmed figs. They also have the best lettuces and herbs usually delivered with the roots still attached. These guys are also generous with giving us samples of their new products for me to experiment with, like the rare macapuno and local wild passionfruit. They also have excellent customer service and are very generous with their time for chefs like me who have so many questions about their amazing produce. Their work ethic and harvest truly inspire me to create new dishes for Casa Luisa.
