Make room, as there’s a new croissant hybrid in town

This story was first published on September 23, 2022, and updated on October 6, 2022.

From brookies (brownie-like cookie) to cronuts (croissant-donut), hybrid pastries have been taking the world by storm—and for good reason. These delectable creations combine two or more pastries together, creating something unique and indulgent.

Bakeries are constantly coming up with unique cross-breed bakes, with the latest craze being the Croon, a croissant shaped to resemble a full moon. First seen at Lafayette Grand Café & Bakery, a French bakery in New York City, as Crème Suprêmes, this pastry has since gone viral over Tiktok for its fluffy pastry and creamy filling.

While not all of us are able to travel to New York City for a taste of this croissant hybrid, local bakery Swish Rolls has created its own take on the decadent treat. Named after its circular shape, these croissant moons comprise rich crème fillings encased in a buttery, flaky pastry.

These pastries are available in five flavours including pistachio, Valrhona chocolate and Ham N’ Cheez. The latter is perfect for savoury lovers and comes stuffed with ham and cheese.

These croons are also freshly baked daily and available in limited quantities. So, remember to pre-order them on their website before visiting to avoid disappointment.

At Swish Rolls, these indulgent treats sell out fast. If you're not able to get your hands on some, why not try these other circular croissants that are just as delectable?

1. Gamo

This Muslin-owned café has hopped onto the moon-shaped croissant trend with its own interpretation of the indulgent dessert. Similarly named croons, these sweet treats come in a range of local and Asian flavours, including kaya, matcha white chocolate, and goma (black sesame). The goma is perfect if you prefer something less sweet, as it comes with an earthy and nutty paste enveloped in a crisp and flaky circular croissant.

2. Nuage Boulangerie & Patisserie

Stop by this French bakery for its stunning Pom Poms, inspired by the moon-shaped treat. Here, the bakery’s fluffy and cloud-like croissants are generously filled with a range of sweet cream, including matcha azuki, sesame mochi and dark chocolate. For something fruity and nutty, the raspberry pistachio Pom Pom comprises a buttery French croissant stuffed with pistachio pastry cream, and a light and tangy raspberry marmalade.

3. Yeast Side

This café-bar has also come up with its own interpretation of a circular croissant. Dubbed as Swirls, these flaky croissants are generously filled with custard and cream fillings. Three flavours are available—for something boozy, go for the almond Swirl, a buttery round croissant filled with a nutty rum almond cream. The treat is topped with almond flakes, adding texture to each bite.

4. Keong Saik Bakery

Another bakery hopping onto the circular croissant bandwagon is Keong Saik Bakery. A mix between a croissant and a bread roll, its creations are called Crolls—crisp and flaky on the outside, like a croissant, with a soft and fluffy interior, resembling a bread roll. Those who have a palate for local flavours can opt for the Milo Croll, filled with rich and creamy Milo chocolate filling. While those who prefer a savoury treat can try the cacio e pepe Croll, inspired by the classic Roman pasta dish of spaghetti mixed with pecorino romano cheese and black pepper. The savoury creation comprises the same croissant exterior generously stuffed with a cheesy and peppery filling.

5. La Levain

The La LeBombz is this artisanal bakehouse’s latest creation. These decadent bites see sweet and savoury fillings encased within a buttery croissant pastry. A range of flavours are available, such as the tangy passionfruit and mango La LeBombz; and mushroom and Camembert cheese La LeBombz. The latter is a savoury version, featuring the bakery’s circular croissant pastry layered with juicy mushrooms, Camembert cheese and rocket.
