Tainan and Kaohsiung feature in Taiwan’s Michelin Guide for the first time this year, with two one-Michelin-starred restaurants awarded in Kaohsiung, while five new restaurants receive one Michelin Star in Taipei and two new restaurants are awarded a Green Star

Michelin announced the full list of restaurants featured in its Michelin Guide to Taiwan today (August 30). This year's Guide is the fifth annual edition and includes, for the first time, selections in the cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung in the south of Taiwan.

Kaohsiung's debut was marked by two restaurants being awarded one Michelin Star each: chef Kenji Takeda’s Liberté, and Sho 承, the first overseas outpost of renowned Tokyo restaurant Den. Twenty establishments in Kaohsiung were listed as Bib Gourmand restaurants, which means they offer “exceptional value-for-money gourmet experiences”, while a further 17 were “Michelin selected” (formerly known as the Michelin Plate). In Tainan, 27 restaurants received the Bib Gourmand distinction, with an additional 17 venues “selected”. There were no Stars awarded to restaurants in Tainan this year.

The country's capital of Taipei is home to five new one-Michelin-starred restaurants including two new additions: Shin Yeh Taiwanese Signature and Yu Kapo; and three promotions: Canadian chef Jeffrey Downs’ Holt; French-Japanese restaurant Paris 1930 Hideki Takayama; and Sushiyoshi, the third overseas outpost of the famous Osaka sushi-ya.

In Taichung, five venues retained their Michelin Stars (Jimmy Lim's two-Michelin-starred JL Studio, and one-Michelin-starred Fleur de Sel, Forchetta, Oretachi No Nikuya and Sur-), while four new establishments entered the selection. These are Japanese restaurant Inflorescence; contemporary French restaurant L’Atelier par Yao; contemporary European eatery PI; and Meidz Seafood, which, as its name suggests, focuses on the fruits of the sea.

Additionally, two new restaurants in Taipei were awarded a Green Star, joining last year’s winners Yangming Spring (Shilin) and one-Michelin-starred Mountain and Sea House. The new restaurants honoured for their sustainable practices are Ember, which is committed to ecological protection and agricultural reform; and Little Tree Food (Da-an Road), which promotes meat-free dining and encourages customers to bring their own takeaway containers while shunning single-use plastics.

In addition to the selection of restaurants, Michelin announced a number of Special Awards including the Young Chef Award, which went to chefs Kei Too and Johnny Tsai of one Michelin-starred T+T; the Welcome and Service Award, which was bestowed upon Pauline Yu of one Michelin-starred Fleur de Sel; and the Sommelier Award, which went to Bass Lin of one Michelin-starred Paris 1930 Hideki Takayama.

Below is the complete list of starred restaurants for the Michelin Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung 2022. The asterisk denotes new additions to the category.
