The Michelin Guide Singapore 2022 gala and star revelation returned to its physical format at the Marina Bay Sands this evening (July 12). After a two-year break, the much-awaited affair was attended by restaurateurs, chefs and gourmands who were excited to find out which restaurants were included in the prestigious list.
Before the big reveal, the Michelin Guides’ international director, Gwendal Poullennec, took to the stage to welcome the guests and share how Singapore’s dining scene remains vibrant despite the ongoing pandemic. He noted that the night was all about celebrating the recovery of F&B and its talents, and he and the Michelin Guide team continue to be impressed by the chefs’ creativity and resilience.
Poullennec proceeded to reveal the restaurants which earned their deserving stars. A total of 52 restaurants were included in the prestigious ranking—three more than last year's 49. French restaurants Les Amis and Odette, and modern European restaurant Restaurant Zén retained their stars—an impressive feat considering the struggles of the F&B scene over the past few years.
The total of two-starred restaurants also jumped from five to seven, with Cloudstreet and Thevar restaurants joining Jaan by Kirk Westaway, Saint Pierre, Shisen Hanten, Shoukouwa and Waku Ghin.
As for one-starred establishments, 42 made it on the list—seven are new additions. These are Burnt Ends (which moved to a new location in Dempsey), Euphoria, Hamamoto, La Dame De Pic and Marguerite. Euphoria chef-owner Jason Tan told Tatler Dining that he is lucky to earn a star this year. “I am very fortunate to have a strong team... we are also lucky to retain the support of local diners.”
Retaining the one star for Béni is executive chef Kenji Yamanaka, who admitted that the past two years have been extremely difficult. That said, earning the star is a validation of their hard work and perseverance. “It’s still a valuable achievement after all these years, and we will always do our best to earn it.”
The night was made extra special with the special awards given to restaurant staff members who make the dining experience even more memorable. The two new awards are the Welcome and Service Award, which went to Saint Pierre’s restaurant manager, Samantha Goh, and the Sommelier Award, which went to Les Amis’ sommelier, Eric Eu.
Returning this year is the Young Chef Award, which is given to the rising star in the F&B industry. Nae:um chef-owner Louis Han, 31, earned this well-deserved accolade with his modern and creative ways of presenting Korean cuisine.
