Feast at Nook

If you're seeking a spot to dine, sip or unwind, the recently launched Nook on Craig Road provides a diverse array of dining experiences spread across three floors

You won’t ever go hungry in Tanjong Pagar, especially with the array of F&B concepts spanning fine dining restaurants, casual eateries, bistros and wine bars situated within this food haven. Now, you can add Nook to your list, a three-storey, multi-concept space from F&B group Reroot Asia that recently opened along Craig Road.

Nook spans a total of 7,226 square feet and comprises a restaurant on the first level, Nowhere bar on the second floor, and a members’ lounge which doubles as a private event space on the third storey. While the concepts differ, the whole space exudes the same industrial design imagined by the group’s young and up-and-coming designer.

You will immediately sense its dark and moody vibe (as if you’re in a ’90s punk band music video set) once you step inside the restaurant enclosed in bare concrete walls accented with repurposed paintings hanging on the wall. According to Nook’s marketing director, these paintings were sourced from second-hand stores in Asia and reimagined with splashes of paint to give them a grungier and more contemporary look.

All eyes, however, will be immediately drawn to the centrepiece displayed behind a glass wall in the main dining room: box-shaped television sets impaled on thick rods jutting from the floor. The same rugged design treatment extends to the bar, cast in atmospheric lighting and outfitted with recycled old paintings and bulky chairs, and a dark private space with its own small bar and a giant screen.

Head chef Koh Han Jie, another up-and-coming local talent, helms the kitchen. Trained in the kitchens of Bread Street Kitchen and Les Amis in Singapore, he has developed his own culinary style which taps into his European and French culinary background but injected with Asian flair.

Most of his dishes are made for sharing. In the crispy scales kinmedai alfonsino, for example, the fish is paired with a creamy beurre blanc and leek sauce, while the Aqina 1⁄2 organic chicken is aged for seven days before it is coated in French butter and roasted until the meat is moist and juicy, and the skin golden and crispy. The bar complements the food with its selection of wines and curated cocktails, served across all three spaces.
