A specialist in Portuguese cuisine nestled on a terrace above Central Market, Bartolo is the place to go when in search of authentic pastel de nata. Besides a collection of small plates and sangria, you’ll find custard-filled and perfectly flaky pastel de nata in its truest form, topped with red berries, and infused with matcha or chocolate.

Hoifan Company

A recently opened dining venue, the menu at Hoifan Company is a showcase of nostalgic Malaysian favourites, each uplifted by the restaurant’s inventive twists. Mains here take shape with Wagyu beef dotting plates of char kway teow and barbecue chicken siew bao filling stuffed in a beef wellington-style crust. Its Portuguese egg tarts stay true to this ethos too, with the familiar treats being brightened by citrus zest or sprinkled with a touch of salt.

Founded in 1893, Bunn Choon Restaurant is one of Chinatown’s oldest breakfast spots and has been serving its signature egg tarts for over a century. Fresh Cantonese-style egg tarts encased in the restaurant’s original or charcoal pastry alongside a slew of other bakes including pineapple sticks, salted egg yolk puffs, and of course, dim sum can be found here.

Oriental Kopi

If you’ve seen queues inexplicably forming in the middle of shopping malls, chances are you’ve stumbled across one of Oriental Kopi’s many outlets. Known for elevating kopitiam culture, the restaurant’s signature is its Portuguese egg tart. Its colossal-sized version of the treat takes shape with a hand-folded and 128-layered pastry filled with a decadent but not cloying caramelised egg custard.

A crowd-favourite for dim sum in Taipan and Puchong, traditional classics are aplenty here from siew mai to cheong fun but one of its signatures proves to be its Portuguese egg tarts. An unassuming storefront in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park, Crostata Suprema sets itself apart with its egg tarts by offering both Portuguese and Hong Kong-style iterations of the sweet. Here, you’ll find Portuguese egg tarts distinguished by their defining caramelised tops alongside slightly smaller Hong Kong egg tarts with pastry shells reminiscent of shortcrust.
