Hot weather been getting you down? Here are six cool spots offering this refreshing Japanese shaved ice dessert.
Once upon a time, only aristocrats could enjoy kakigori. This syrup-flavoured shaved ice dessert was reserved for members of the Japanese nobility in the Heian period (794-1185 AD). Blocks of ice would be saved during the winter months, then shaved and served as a refreshing summer treat.
In the 19th century, the common folk, thanks to the development of refrigeration, could finally enjoy kakigori. Today, this frozen delight is enjoyed worldwide.
How do you tell kakigori apart from other shaved ice desserts such as our local ais kacang or Korea’s bingsu? It’s usually in the choice of toppings or ice texture. Kakigori’s ice tends to feel flaky while bingsu’s has often been compared to powder snow. Ais kacang’s ice is packed more solid, and not as high as the former two.
