Habitual picks: Bacon bowl or steak and eggs with Sitio San Roque Sweet Typica washed coffee, via Aeropress

In 2014, Habitual Coffee café and roastery opened up shop in Ortigas—and it didn’t take long for avid coffee drinkers to get acquainted with the brand. Just one year later, co-founder Kaye Ong-Rocamora rose to prominence in coffee circles after taking home the gold at the local Philippine Aeropress Championships, and subsequently third in the world rounds. Since then, Habitual Coffee has been known for its Aeropress filter brews, a speciality they continue to feature at their new Salcedo Village location.

The new outpost is no-frills but thoughtfully arranged for long stays—solo tables can easily be joined for group work, and there’s zero pressure to vacate. The menu is developed for all-day café campers, with enough variety to carry you from breakfast through an afternoon slump. Meanwhile, the drinks build on their flagship Salcedo blend (chocolatey and nutty with complex florals and berries), available filter brewed or via espresso, plus matcha, horchata and loose leaf teas. At its heart, Habitual yearns to build habit-forming coffee experiences that turn first-time guests into friendly regulars.

Yearning to bring Melbourne’s artisanal café culture to Manila, Shanel & Daynard Tan opened Panco (a portmanteau of pandesal and coffee) along C Palanca Street, Legazpi Village, in 2022. Armed with beans from Melbourne-based speciality roaster Market Lane Coffee, a laidback and intimate atmosphere and an uncomplicated selection of comfort food dishes, Panco soon became a go-to spot for remote workers looking for a change of scenery. Though the brand has rapidly evolved with four branches across the Metro and a broader menu of food and drinks, its commitment to creating a vibrant “third place” for guests to converge and connect remains unchanged.

Their menu reflects a focus on wellness with a generous selection of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free items, but also embraces their new urban address with heartier and cheekier picks.
