Krug’s Les Créations de 2011 comprises the Krug 2011 and Krug Grande Cuvée 167 ème Édition, two special releases crafted with the year 2011 in mind

“A good champagne house should only create two champagnes of the same quality”. These were the famous words of Joseph Krug when he founded the House of Krug in 1843 with the goal of creating the most exquisite champagnes with the same level of distinction every year—regardless of the climate. This vision rings true until today, with the champagne house led by cellar master Julie Cavil crafting the most beautiful expressions of bubbly in special cuvées like Les Créations.

Created in honour of Joseph Krug, the Les Créations de 2011 collection is the latest chapter in the Maison’s storied history of expressing a particular era in a bottle—in this case, 2011. Winemakers would remember the unpredictable weather during that period; an intense summer started earlier than usual and it was followed by rainfall and cool weather, as well as scorching heat on the eve of harvest.

The story of the year is told through the Krug 2011, a blend of 46 per cent pinot noir, 37 per cent chardonnay and 17 per cent pinot meunier. The vintage was nicknamed “Spirited Roundness” by the tasting committee due to its finesse and power, after having spent 12 years maturing in the wine cellar. Imbibers will understand why once they nose the champagne, which expresses itself distinctly with lively aromas of apricots and white fruits followed by tangy star red fruit and citrus, as well as hints of basil leaf and liquorice. The power and roundedness come through on the palate with the fruity notes tasting like they had been cooked by the heat, resulting in characters of dried fruits, marzipan, jam and barley sugar.

Also part of the Les Créations de 2011 collection is the Krug Grande Cuvée 167 ème Édition, an assemblage of 191 wines from 13 different years. The oldest one dates back to 1995 while the youngest is from 2011. In making the new Édition—which was crafted with the harvest of 2011 in mind—Cavil and her team of five to six wine tasters sampled around 250 wines from the aforementioned year two to three times, and about 150 reserve wines from 14 different years.

With a record of over 4,000 tasting notes, Cavil shared that she selected wines harvested in 2011 from plots near Montagne de Reims Nord, in Mareuil sur Ay. These were chosen for their “surprisingly beautiful, ample and fruity expressions”, while the pinot noir wines from plots in Verzonay were added to give the wine “structure”. Older reserve wines from Verzonay brought finesse and mature elegance, the touch of pinot meunier from Sainte Gemme imparted fruitiness, and the chardonnay from Côte des Blancs, Chouilly and Oge gave the champagne that desired character and body.

Krug’s Les Créations de 2011 is indeed a continuation of Joseph Krug’s commitment to crafting the most exquisite champagnes till today. Olivier Krug, the sixth-generation director of the House of Krug, shared: “At Krug, we love to share our stories and with a Krug Vintage we tell the story of an interesting year. It is our love and dedication which allows these delicious tales to be brought to life.”
