For close to two centuries, The Glen Grant’s pioneering techniques and signature profile have continued to captivate connoisseurs worldwide, solidifying its enduring reputation in the world of whiskies

Whisky appreciation has been on the rise in Singapore, with enthusiasts seeking distinctive spirits that not only delight the palate but also embody the rich heritage and craftsmanship of their respective distilleries. This is precisely what The Glen Grant is all about.

Founded in 1840 by James and John Grant, the brothers built The Glen Grant distillery in the once sleepy town of Rothes in Speyside, Scotland with the vision of crafting exceptional single malt Scotch whiskies that made full use of the region’s bounty. Most notable are the surrounding plains where the key ingredient barley was grown, as well as the River Spey that became the main water source in whisky making. Innovators at heart, they also introduced electricity to the town and engineered a water turbine that supplied power to the distillery.

While we owe it to the brothers for founding The Glen Grant distillery, it was James ‘The Major’ Grant who carved its legacy as we know it today after inheriting the distillery in 1872. His constant pursuit of flavours brought him from southern Africa to the Himalayas, discovering local flowers, edible plants and herbs that he brought back to Scotland and nurtured in the vast glasshouses built in the property. Now called the ‘Garden of Splendours’, this was also the inspiration behind The Glen Grant whiskies’ delicate character that was shaped through his pioneering whisky-making techniques.

The most notable was introducing taller and slender pot stills with water-cooling purifiers that changed the profile of the new make spirit. When matured in oak barrels, the whisky embodies the distillery’s delicate aroma and signature fruity character, highlighted by vibrant green apple notes.

Heritage in a bottle

The distillery’s storied heritage is fiercely guarded and preserved by its succession of master distillers. Greig Stables, who has been with the distillery since 2006, has taken over the reins from Dennis Malcolm OBE, who retired last year after an impressive 63-year tenure. Stables’ day-to-day responsibilities include visiting the stone warehouses and nosing the spirits, ensuring that only the finest quality make it to their single malt whiskies featured in both their prestige range and limited-edition releases.

Launched last year is The Glasshouse Collection, comprising the 21 Year Old, 25 Year Old  and 30 Year Old single malt Scotch whiskies. While the 21 Year Old, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, is the youngest of the lot, it embodies The Glen Grant’s complex taste profile: sweet and fruity on the nose, followed by a burst of rich tropical fruits and creamy notes on the palate that belies its age.

Aged longer in the same casks, the 25 Year Old has a deeper taste profile characterised by dark chocolates and interspersed with zesty orange rind, rich oak and nutmeg, while the 30 Year Old has that full-bodied robustness balanced out by the sweetness reminiscent of Demerara sugar, and rich fruitiness that The Glen Grant is known for.

Nearly two centuries since its founding, and The Glen Grant keeps on innovating with limited-edition releases coveted by whisky enthusiasts all over the globe. Before his retirement, the legendary Malcolm launched The Glen Grant Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary Edition in honour of his six-decade tenure in the distillery, as well as The Glen Grant Devotion, an exquisite 70-year-old whisky crafted by Malcolm in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth. Stables continues this tradition with the soon-to-launch 65 Year Old, which will be part of the new Splendours Collection.

As The Glen Grant expands its prestige collection and introduces new expressions, it remains rooted in the heritage pioneered by the Grant brothers in the 1800s. This legacy has shaped The Glen Grant into a whisky beloved by connoisseurs around the world, with a story that will endure for generations to come.

The Glen Grant is available at selected online stores, liquor stores and bars. The Glen Grant premium range from 21 Years-Old are exclusively available at Campari RARE Singapore. For purchases and enquiries, please contact Cathy Sun at cathy.sun@campari.com.
