Bright and refreshing, the Paloma bursts with tart grapefruit and a squeeze of lime, perfect for the summer. Whereas contemporary iterations call for fresh grapefruit juice, club soda, and a sweetener, the traditional recipe is simple—utilising grapefruit soda. It can be hard to find grapefruit soda. Also, the sweetness and sourness levels can vary.

Tatler tip: Experiment with several brands or even different ratios of grapefruit soda to fresh grapefruit juice. Mix them until you find your ideal Paloma.

Made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, the Moscow Mule is famous worldwide and easily recognisable by its signature copper mug. The Mexican Mule replaces the vodka with tequila, producing a buck (a cocktail made with ginger beer/ale, citrus, and liquor) that is sweet yet tart, with a subtle kick of spice.

Why choose between bubbly and tequila when you can have both? Served in a Collins glass, the Lone Ranger is a popular twist on the French 75—that swaps out the gin for tequila and sparkling white wine with sparkling rosé. Invented by bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler, it was designed to be the perfect brunch cocktail, vibrant with notes of red berries and citrus from the lemon juice.

As you might have guessed, the Bloody Maria is a tequila-laden twist on the popular Bloody Mary. While some recipes substitute the vodka for tequila, others might call for additional adjustments to allow the tequila to shine. Have more fun with it and experiment with garnishes, from olives to celery stalks and pickle spears to cooked shrimp!

Tatler tip: Tequila fits naturally into the flavour profile of a Bloody Mary, but you can even try using mezcal to impart smokier notes to the umami, spicy drink.

5. Tequila Sunrise

A classic beachside beverage, the Tequila Sunrise is easily identifiable by its layered yellow, orange, and red hues hence its name (although many ask why it isn’t called a Tequila Sunset instead). Using only tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup, with ice and maraschino cherries to garnish, the Tequila Sunrise is refreshing and sweet with a bit of tang, making it dangerously easy to drink.

Tatler tip: Whenever possible, try to use fresh orange juice rather than anything concentrated or reconstituted from concentrate—the fresher, the better!
