Unveiled by actress, Johnnie Walker Blue Label ambassador, and Perfect Moment shareholder Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the Ice Chalet is a wonderful nod to the enchanting “Blue Hour”—that serene, magical time just before dusk when the sky glows with soft blue hues. It’s the ideal moment for connection and celebration, which this exceptional whisky aims to elevate.

Of course, the contents of each bottle also bear the hallmarks of famed master blender Emma Walker and offer notes of cinnamon-spiced apple that give way to warm cloves and spices before finishing with subtle hints of Alpine smoke.

“When creating Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet, we set out to blend a whisky that was inspired by the Alpine landscape and captured the magic of special Après Ski moments,” reveals Walker. Thus, to capture the essence of winter, Walker and her team started by mining historical data from the UK’s National Weather Service to track Scotland’s coldest winters over the decades.

Walker then targeted Diageo’s most northern and highest-altitude distilleries, notably Dalwhinnie, Clynelish and Brora, and set out to use whiskies distilled during those winters to create the desired wintry flavour profile. “Through this, we’ve uncovered rare expressions that were distilled in the depths of Scotland’s coldest winters and blended these with whiskies from some of our most northern and highest altitude distilleries to create a velvety smooth Scotch with Johnnie Walker Blue Label’s signature depth of flavour at its heart.”

The key effect of winter on the distillation process is that cold weather brings about the quicker condensation of alcohol, which means a bit less copper contact for the spirit when the alcohol vapours pass over the copper surface of the still. Hence, at higher-altitude distilleries like Dalwhinne, for example, one gets a very different new spirit between winter and summer as less copper influence means more sultry, heavy, and full-bodied whisky. Meanwhile, Brora’s inclusion in the blend means some significantly old whisky—from 1983, the year of the distillery’s closure, or earlier. That lends a light smoky element, and there’s also the waxy-like texture of Clynelish.

In the new limited release, the iconic Johnnie Walker square bottle meets Perfect Moment’s North Star and houndstooth print in a deep blue reversible bottle bag crafted from a new liquid blue and silver fabric. Once the bottle of whisky is taken out of the bag and makes its rounds, the bottle bag itself doubles as a crossbody bag to enable the wearer to transition from the slopes to the city or resort town when the time comes for that long-awaited next ski trip.

Best of all, with the 2024 ski season in full swing right now, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet is also set to host a series of luxurious ‘Blue Hour’ experiences at selected popular ski destinations throughout Deer Valley, Utah, in the US, as well as in Niseko, Japan.
