Thomas Hardy, an icon and pioneer in the South Australian winemaking industry, played an integral role in elevating the McLaren Vale region to what it is today. Hardy was born in Devon, England, and eventually made his way to Australia with big dreams and a mere £30 in his pocket. After a couple of years in Adelaide, Hardy bought his first plot of land, marking the beginning of the illustrious Hardys Wines journey.

In 1877, Hardy incorporated his four sons, James, Thomas, Nathaniel, and Robert, into the company, subsequently renamed Thomas Hardy & Sons. By the start of the 20th century, Thomas Hardy & Sons had become the largest winemaker in the South Australia region.

Through trials and tribulations, including a vineyard fire and the loss of family members, the winemaker persevered, celebrating its centenary in 1953 and further milestones during those years. In 1976, the head of Hardys Wines at the time, Eileen Hardy, was awarded the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

Hardys Wine has seen continued success throughout its years as it spread its wine wings across the Australian subcontinent and abroad. Hardys has also kept up with the times and developed its own non-alcoholic wine with groundbreaking technology in 2021.
