The nasi lemak specialist opens its doors on Saturday, and offers a more extensive menu of new and signature dishes that pair well with its coconut rice

Fans of The Coconut Club will be glad to know that the nasi lemak restaurant will re-open its doors this Saturday (May 28) at its new flagship outlet on Beach Road. The restaurant has taken over a three-storey conservation shophouse formerly occupied by Nox Dine in the Dark and offers an elevated dining experience with its updated menu, new drinks programme and a bigger and stylish space.

The first floor is reserved for walk-ins who will be able to order the nasi lemak sets and breakfast menu that will be launched soon. That said, the bright and airy all-day dining room is anchored by an open kitchen, satay grill and a large communal table made for families and friends to bond over food and drinks.

Speaking of drinks, level one now comes with a bar that has a cold-press machine built by an F1 engineer to brew your coffee to the restaurant's exacting standards. And, for even more choices, there is also a cocktail menu with local-inspired quaffs like the Pineapple Old Fashioned, a medley of Scotch whisky, pineapple skin syrup and coconut water; and The Coconut Club Mai Tai, stirred with pandan, Plantation 3 Star rum, coconut milk and lemon juice.

Reservations are now available for The Coconut Club. If you manage to book a table, you will be seated on the second floor which is swathed in calming hues of green to envision a floral and fauna motif. The walls are also decorated in a charcoal mural of banana plants and fruits, created by local artist Aeropalmics.

The menu on the second floor includes the signature nasi lemak and a selection of new dishes that best represent lemak food. Shares culinary director Daniel Sia: “We have spent the last year researching and uncovering a huge range of regional recipes with a particular focus on understanding how nasi lemak is served across Southeast Asia, and honing in on dishes that pair beautifully with our signature coconut rice.”

When you order the nasi lemak, you’re given three options—Ikan Bakar Set, charcoal-grilled Selar Kuning fish stuffed with rempah; Otah Set, charcoal-grilled fish cake wrapped in banana leaf; and Ayam Goreng Berempah Set, spiced and fried organic chicken with crispy rempah crumbs. Of course, these sets come with the usual accompaniments of house-made sambal, anchovies and peanuts, and light and fluffy coconut rice. Top up for unlimited servings—you will need it when you order other mains.

Standouts include the percik kambing, utterly tender lamb short ribs marinated in coconut milk and tamarind; ketam masak lemak cili api, meaty crab steeped in spicy turmeric coconut milk; and sambal mushrooms, stir-fried mushrooms tossed in sambal and crowned with soft boiled egg.

Closing out the menu are the local desserts, and the coconut sorbet is recommended after feasting on rich and spicy mains.
