This art and whisky lover draws parallels between the two crafts and shares why supporting Filipino talent means so much to him

Creativity, and artistry are at the core of a variety of industries, in fact some may say that these traits and facets are instrumental and even necessary to all career paths. When someone is consumed by a passion for their craft, the details, nuances and message behind every move matters. So much so, that work no longer becomes a means to survive but instead develops into part of what gives their lives meaning. From the art world, to the realm of fine liquors and whisky makers we speak with Raul Francisco to find out what this art afficionado says about the industry, and what parallels he draws between art and fine scotch.

While he may have entered the art world relatively late, founding Provenance Art Gallery several years ago, Francisco has always been fascinated with art be it via fashion or design. “I grew up surrounded by art and creative people. In the early 2000s, my wife and I started our personal art collection. Slowly but surely, it grew through the years, and I really developed a passion for contemporary Filipino art. I believed in supporting the cause of the local Filipino artist. I did that in fashion and saw the need to extend it to art. I wanted to create a space that would present Filipino artists on a global stage, and attract a wide audience,” he expresses. With the breadth of spectacular talent here in our country, Francisco was thrilled to show off his new finds and put artists under the spotlight at Provenance.

Scotch whisky brand, Johnnie Walker, agrees with how important it is to celebrate Filipino artistry and has created limited-edition bottles of both Blue Label and XR21, with custom designs from Dan Matutina, Tracie Anglo Dizon and Anna Bautista. With each artist's eye-catching creations, the bottle suddenly transforms into a collectable, giving the elegant beverage yet another interesting layer and story to share.

That story, and the whole journey that comes part and parcel with curating an exhibition, collaborating with an artist, or understanding a work of art is part of what intrigues Francisco. The never-ending education, learning about the 'how' and 'why', reveals new meaning to each brushstroke, and every sip. The whisky lover says: “I love the whole process behind the end product of a work of art. I love the creative process of having discourse with the artists, collaborating on concepts and exhibits, working with curators and innovative people that are like-minded in promoting Filipino talent to the world.”

Interestingly, art and whisky both help to fuel fond memories, emotions, and experiences that bring people happiness. “Like good whisky, art helps create an experience. I have been drinking Johnnie Walker for almost 40 years, and it has been my go-to drink. I like it on the rocks, and preferably with good company. To me, art and whisky appreciation is a luxury. Your taste for it becomes more refined and sophisticated as time goes by,” Francisco shares. He adds that Blue Label specifically is a drink he often looks forward to. “I really enjoy Blue Label. It feels like a luxurious, elegant drink, and I like that it is complex with lots of depth to every sip.”

While further discussing the parallels between art and whisky, Francisco references Johnnie Walker’s tag line is “keep walking” which hints at pushing forward, adapting, innovation and perseverance. With regards to the art world, especially during the pandemic, he commented on how this message resonated with him on a deeper level. “Keep Walking tells me to continue evolving; to keep growing, learning, and innovating. These have been my mantras through the years actually. Regardless of what is thrown my way, the curveballs of life so to speak, I adapt and adopt new ways of thinking, and roll with the punches. Never stagnant, always stretching,” the gallerist relates.

Building on that, Francisco believes that the landscape of the art world has changed in the country due to this pandemic. “Like all businesses, there has been a shift to digital platforms. However, what has been encouraging and promising is how people have taken an interest in curating their spaces. People spend an increased amount of time at home, so there has been more of an interest in personalising their surroundings, and making their homes extra visually appealing,” Francisco adds.

So be it through fine art, or top-shelf whisky, take a cue from Raul Francisco and surround yourself with delicious favourites and artfully made crafts to bring depth, beauty, and more meaning to your everyday life. While at it, why not zero in on Filipino creations for that inspirational reminder of how wonderfully talented our nation can be.
