Be greeted by rude waiters, great burgers... and even a free drink if your name is Karen
We’ve all had our fair share of unpleasant dining experiences. But Karen’s Diner takes it to the next level by paying their staff to be rude to customers. The plus point? They’re expecting a fair share of rudeness from you, hence the name, ‘Karen’.
Popularised by Gen Z on social media, particularly TikTok, the name ‘Karen’ has since become a term that refers explicitly to a certain type of woman. Typically, she displays nasty behaviour that stems from, well, privilege. ‘Karens’ are people who are usually caught belittling service staff and demanding to speak to the ‘manager’ while hurling insults and abusive comments.
Bringing the iconic request “I want to speak to the manager” to life, the restaurant is named after the obnoxious and intolerable ‘Karen’. The brainchild of Aden Levin and James Farrell, the retro American diner was founded in 2021, and caused a massive stir when it first opened its doors in Sydney, Australia. The diner deliberately creates an unpleasant dining experience where customers are able to complain about the rude service they ironically went in for.
The infamous diner is expected to make waves in Singapore soon. Although no specific date has been set for its arrival, we know that the diner will be running till May 31, 2023.
Claiming “great burgers” and “rude service”, the only positive experience you should expect on a visit to the diner is digging into the classic American burgers.
