These eateries push creativity with sando combinations that deviate from the norm

Japanese sandos are sandwiches made with shokupan, enriched Japanese milk bread. Part of a category of food known as yōshoku, meaning Western-inspired Japanese food, sandos involve meticulous attention to detail. The sandwiches are sliced in half after being neatly wrapped, revealing the perfect cross section.

Common iterations include the katsu sando, filled with breaded, fried meat and finished with tonkatsu sauce or the tamago sando, filled with egg mayo. Sweet sando varieties containing fruit and whipped cream are also commonplace.

We’ve rounded up five unusual sando combinations to try on your next sandwich run.

ONO’s Honey Fig Sando and Houjicha Ogura Sando

Specialising in matcha and coffee, ONO is also know for fluffy sandos. Try the Honey Fig Sando, which is made with whole, fresh figs engulfed in a luscious layer of homemade honey cream. Alternatively, another unusual sando is the Houjicha Ogura Sando, filled with light houjicha cream, red bean paste and tart orange confit pieces. Pair your sando with ONO's iconic two-tiered matcha and coffee infusion aptly named When Two Worlds Collide, where a decadent layer of matcha cream floats above cold brew coffee.

Sammich’s Kai’s Style Sando

Sammich’s Kai’s Style Sando uses homemade Hokkaido sourdough milk loaf but that’s where the similarities with traditional sando end. Packed with boneless chicken breast smothered in a sauce of your choice of spice level, the indulgent sandwich is instead a twist on the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Choose to order a selection of wings or tenders on the side, which also have a customisable spice level.

VCR Stacks’ Egg Sando

While at first glance VCR Stacks’ much loved Egg Sando may seem like your run-of-the-mill tamago sando, the sandwich uses sourdough brioche rather than the typical shokupan, while the egg mayo component contains herbs such as chives and dill as well as celery. Pair a sandwich from VCR Stacks with a flaky pastry from VCR Bakehouse, located just a short walk down Shoplex.

Sunday Coffee and Cakes’ Mentaiko Sando

Based in Taman Bukit Indah, Sunday Coffee and Cakes serves a decadent Mentaiko Sando, consisting of a Japanese rolled omelette finished with house made creamy mentaiko sauce with pollock roe. Crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside, the layer of mentaiko is torched prior to serving. If mentaiko isn't up your alley, the café also serves a Tamagoyaki Sando, the aforementioned sandwich sans the pollock roe.
