The highly anticipated Formula 1 is back on Singapore shores. Fans are gearing up for the race, none happier as compared to local fans, who are delighted at the return of their favourite racing stars from September 30 to October 2, 2022.

The 2022 Formula racing season has seen many highs and lows, and will soon make its stop in Singapore after Belgium. F1 tickets this year have been selling out rapidly thanks to a stellar line-up of drivers and exciting stage performances.

It is safe to say that the night race this year is all set to impress. But who are the talented drivers that you should keep a look out for?

From team changes to retirement, here are some drivers to keep your eyes on at the Marina Bay Street Circuit:

1. Zhou Guanyu

The Alfa Romeo rookie and the first Chinese national on the F1 stage started his season debut by scoring points in Bahrain, right down to his horrific crash at Silverstone in July. Thankfully (and miraculously enough), he has since recovered from the crash and will be behind the wheel again in Belgium.

His dedication and boldness on the track has rewarded him with a steady progression among the ranks of veteran and seasoned drivers. A force to be reckoned with, Alfa Romeo technical director Jan Monchaux described Zhou as the “a surprise of the season”.

Nothing short of praises, Zhou pursued his racing ambition at age 12 after watching his racing hero Fernando Alonso when he was five.

2. Fernando Alonso

Double World Champion and F1 veteran will be racing for the last time this season with Alpine. He joins Aston Martin next season, replacing Sebastian Vettel.

Local fans will get a last look at the Spaniard in Alpine’s bold and bright colours at the Grand Prix before he dons green when he returns next season. Both fast and consistent, he has long been a fan favourite.

Highly adept at racing; having begun kart racing at the age of three, he has become one of the most respected drivers in F1. Back home in his native Spain, he has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports.

3. Sebastian Vettel

Arguably the most popular driver to have emerged out of the Singapore Grand Prix back in the day, he has had a grand total of five wins in Singapore.

Fans will get a last look at the German racing star in Singapore as he has announced his retirement by the end of the 2022 season. His incredible career has led him to become one of racing’s all-time greats. He has won the Overtake Award for a whopping 132 overtakes during the 2021 season, proving both his skill and speed.

Apart from racing, he also takes an interest in environmental activism, often seen arriving and leaving the track on two wheels.

4. Kevin Magnussen

Returning this season after a brief departure from racing in 2020, he drives for Haas, replacing Nikita Mazepin. A late runner to the season, he scored a fifth place finish at Bahrain and is now ranked 11, behind Fernando Alonso.

Walking in the footsteps of his father Jan Magnussen, the second-generation driver cruised through his debut with McLaren in 2014, rising quickly up the junior ranks, becoming the first Dane to stand on the podium at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix.

Known for his skilful manoeuvres and elbows-out approach, fans can see him back on the track at the Singapore Grand Prix.

5. George Russell

The British driver joined Mercedes from Williams at the start of the 2022 season and is currently fourth on the standings.

Famously going by his motto, “If in doubt, go flat out”, his career has been one filled with potential and achievements. Signed by Mercedes for their junior programme in 2017, his experience behind the wheel only grew from there.

Fans can look forward to Russell racing alongside teammate Lewis Hamilton at the Singapore Grand Prix 2022.
