1. Shanti Pereira

Shanti Pereira is arguably one of Singapore’s most accomplished sprinters and this year, she has been on a winning streak.

In May this year, Shanti powered to victory in the 200-metre final at the 31st SEA Games with a time of 23.52 seconds. She set a new national record with her performance. Just days later, she finished second in the 100-metre final.

Earlier this month, at the World Athletics Championships, the runner clocked 23.53 seconds in the 200 metres and is now competing at the Commonwealth Games where she hopes to go even faster.

2. Loh Kean Yew

Last year, Loh Kean Yew had a monumental year which ended with him being given the title of badminton world champion.

2022 has been a different ball game entirely though after Loh fell short of earning a SEA Games singles gold in May and most recently missed out on the finals of the Singapore Open.

The Commonwealth Games, which he is participating in for the second time, will be his opportunity to try to reverse his luck this year.

3. Feng Tianwei

Feng Tianwei is an incredibly successful table tennis player with three Olympic medals to her name. She is world number 16 and finished with a bronze in the women’s singles in 2018. That same year, she teamed up with Yu Mengyu to take home gold in the women’s doubles.

This looks to be Feng’s last Commonwealth Games for now and she will be gearing up to finish with a bang.

4. Toh Wei Soong

Toh Wei Soong is one of Singapore’s most prominent para-swimmers and he will be participating at the Commonwealth Games this year which sees its para-sport programmes running alongside its main multi-sport event.

Toh clinched a bronze in the S7 50-metre freestyle event at the 2018 Games and at last year’s Paralympics, finished seventh in the 50-metre S7 freestyle final and fourth in the S7 50-metre butterfly final. As a result, Toh set new national records in both events.

5. Teong Tzen Wei

Teong Tzen Wei is on a high this year after beating two Southeast Asian Games records at the 31st SEA Games in May, becoming the first Southeast Asian swimmer to go under 22 seconds in the 50-metre freestyle and winning gold in the 50-metre butterfly.

Shortly after, Tong finished eighth in the 50-metre butterfly final at the FINA World Championships. He also set a personal best of 23.03 seconds in the semi-final, the best time set by an Asian swimmer in the event this year. He was also the only Asian representative in the final.

At the Commonwealth Games this year, we will see Tong competing in both the 50-metre butterfly and 50-metre freestyle events.
