The Hong Kong director offers a look at his upcoming TV series, which is part of a trilogy with In The Mood For Love

Nine years after his last film The GrandmasterWong Kar-Wai is ready to make his fans fall in love all over again. The Hong Kong filmmaker is making his directorial comeback with a new TV show, Blossoms Shanghai.

Based on the Shanghainese novel Blossoms by Jin Yucheng, the upcoming drama series stars Hu Ge as Mr. Bao, a self-made millionaire with a troubled past. Set in ‘90s Shanghai, the show follows Bao’s rise to power and his entanglements with several women played by Chinese actresses Ma Yili, Tang Yan, and Xin Zhilei.

Blossoms Shanghai is written by Shanghainese screenwriter Qin Wen and features visuals by the award-winning cinematographer Peter Pau, who worked on the martial arts classic, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

From the new trailer, fans can expect to be transported right back into the dazzling world of Wong’s films, with its ensemble of rich and moody visuals, mysterious characters and passionate romances, all brought to life by a captivating cast. In fact, the auteur previously revealed that Blossoms forms a trilogy with two of his most loved films: In The Mood for Love and 2046.

For Wong, the show is also a form of homecoming. “Jin Yucheng’s landmark novel Blossoms has been the perfect backdrop to visualise and share my love for my birth city,” said the director. “With the series, I would like to invite the audience to immerse in the intrigues of Shanghai and its inhabitants in the early 1990s, an exciting time that paved the way for the prosperity of modern Shanghai.”

Produced by Wong’s Jet Tone Films, Blossoms Shanghai is set to release in 2023. On top of of the TV series, a film version of the show is also in the works, with more details to come. For now, watch the new series trailer above.
