Ring in 2022 with these new movies you shouldn’t miss in Hong Kong cinemas

Happy new year! By now, you might be planning how to start your 2022, whether it’s your next trip overseas, new events to attend or new books to read.

Besides the usual offerings from Netflix, you shouldn’t miss out on all the great movies coming to the big screen this month. Titane, the movie that received the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival is screening in Hong Kong this month while slasher hit Scream, is making a return. Tokyo Revengers’s live adaptation also hits the screens while West Side Story gets a new adaptation from Steven Spielberg.

1. West Side Story

West Side Story is an adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name and follows the rivalry between two opposing groups, the Jets and the Sharks. Caught in between are Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) and their forbidden love.

The newest adaptation is directed by Steven Spielberg and marks Zegler’s feature film debut.

2. Titane

The Palme d’Or-winning movie from Julia Ducournau is finally hitting Hong Kong cinemas this month.

Titane takes place following a series of unexplained crimes and a father is finally reunited with his son who has been missing for 10 years. Or is it the son he’s looking for?

3. Some Like It Rare

This black comedy by Fabrice Eboué is a great watch to kick-off 2022. It centres around Vincent and his butcher shop...which isn’t doing so well financially.

He intentionally runs over a vegan activist who vandalised his store, he uses his skills to discard the body. Soon enough, the shop is swarmed by customers who want his special ham.

4. Scream

The slasher classic makes it return this 2022. Set 25 years after the brutal murders in the town of Woodboro, a new killer puts on the Ghostface mask and begins terrorising a group of teenagers to uncover secrets from the town’s past.

5. Special Delivery

Parasite’s Park So-dam will be gracing the big screen this month as Eun-ha, a junkyard employee by day but a secret delivery clerk by night. Eun-ha handles unusual delivery requests, the ones that the post office can’t handle.

One day, Eun-ha is tasked to pick up a client involved in a gambling crime and is seeking to escape overseas. However, instead of the client, she picks up his son instead. A corrupted police officer is their tail and does everything she can to evade him.

6. The 355

The 355 boasts a stellar line-up of some of the most renowned actresses including Oscar-nominated actress, Jessica Chastain, Oscar winners Lupita Nyong’o and Penelope Cruz, Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Diane Kruger and Golden Horse Film Festival awardee, Bingbing Fan.

The story follows CIA agent Mason Brown (Chastain) who must join forces with German agent, Marie (Kruger), former MI6 and computer specialist Khadijah (Nyong’o) and Colombian psychologist Graciela (Cruz) to retrieve a top-secret weapon all while outsmarting Min Mi Sheng (Fan).

7. Tokyo Revengers

Tokyo Revengers is the live-action adaptation of the Japanese animation of the same name. It follows Takemichi Hanagaki (Takumi Kitamura) who leads a dead-end life in a run-down apartment.

One day, he learns that his ex-girlfriend and her brother have been murdered. Things started to change when he’s accidentally pushed into the train tracks but instead of dying, he travels back 10 years and is tasked with preventing the deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her younger brother in Tokyo Manji by taking on the most powerful syndicate in Kanto.
