From the man who cried as he sang the national anthem to the boy who wanted to say ‘Hi’ to his mother on live television, here are five things that the Internet is obsessed about after the Parade

Singapore celebrated its 57th birthday yesterday and what a celebration it was. In what was the nation’s first full-scale parade since the pandemic, the Marina Bay floating platform saw about 25,000 people in attendance witness the festivities that celebrated our country’s return to relative normalcy.

And it was business as usual for the internet right after the National Day Parade was over. Like every year before it, Singapore woke up today to a slew of memes, videos and pictures of some of the funniest, most emotional and special moments throughout the parade.

From a Red Lions parachutist’s rough landing to the crying man who became an overnight internet sensation, here are the most memorable moments from Singapore’s 57th birthday celebration.

One of the most talked about parts of the parade last night was when Third Warrant Officer (3WO) Jeffrey Heng, a Red Lions parachutist, took a hard landing and had to be stretchered off.

Heng, who was the last of 10 parachutists to land, struggled with the wind and crashed into the ground much to the concern of spectators both physically and at home.

Thankfully, it was soon reported by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen in a Facebook post that Heng was stable and that he was receiving medical attention.

2. The Crying Man

Towards the end of the parade, as Singaporeans everywhere stood to sing the National Anthem in unison, cameras caught a man in the audience who had tears streaming down his face as he sang.

The man, who was soon identified as secondary school teacher Azuan Tan, later said in interviews with local media that he was simply overcome with emotion.

His reaction quickly turned him into an overnight sensation with many social media users praising him while also using him in hilarious memes.

3. Nicole Liel’s BTO Queue Number

Fans of Singaporean TikToker Nicole Liel were in for a treat last night when NDP host Rishi Budhrani singled her out in the crowd and asked her what she was grateful for this National Day.

In typical Liel fashion, she made the entire country chuckle when she said that she was grateful to the Housing Development Board (HDB) for giving her a Build-to-Order (BTO) flat queue number.

She added that she was also grateful for Ya Kun Kaya Toast—and can we blame her? And Ya Kun was clearly listening. The well-loved breakfast spot later thanked her for her support by offering her 57 cups of coffee and tea.

4. The CGI Phoenix

At one point during the parade, spectators were treated to a spectacular showing of fireworks while the theme song, Stronger Together, was performed.

Towards the end of the song, amidst fireworks, a giant phoenix was projected in the sky. On social media, users immediately got to work and tried to figure out how this was achieved and if the feat was really accomplished with fireworks.

It was later revealed that the bird was created and projected into the sky using computer-generated imagery (CGI).

5. The “Hi Mom” Sign

At the end of the parade, as the credits rolled and cameras panned across the crowds gathered in the grandstands, one camera picked up a boy sitting on the shoulders of a friend and holding up a sign that read “Hi Mom”.

The thoughtful sign has since made its rounds on social media, with many creating both sweet and hilarious memes about it.
