Which of Megan Fox's movies and TV shows are really worth watching?

During a regular brainstorming session for one of the country's largest broadcast stations, I was seated at a table across some of the best screenwriters in the industry. We were asked to discern what makes Hollywood blockbuster films amass high viewership. There was a spectrum of answers but the lead writer was hinting at a thought that I never deeply regarded when watching popular films: those who are cast are usually overly gorgeous actors and actresses.

Hollywood, of course, is no stranger to casting stunning actors in films. Having characters played by good-looking actors and actresses are not the problem, but more so how they're objectified in the films they appear in.

The case is true for most popular films including those Megan Fox has appeared in. However, not every role that she's played is entirely problematic, some even lauded as "too ahead of its time".

1. Transformers

The actress skyrocketed to fame when she appeared on screen as the unforgettable Mikaela Banes in Transformers. Fox's chemistry with Shia Labeouf was through the roof in the first film. However iconic her role was in this movie, many question the way Fox was portrayed with scenes where her body is often flaunted in unnecessary angles, feeding the male gaze. The car scene in Transformers and the motorcycle scene in Transformers 2 are perfect examples of this.

"There's nothing wrong with being sexy, it's just the problem that that part was so loud that it muted out the rest of who I was," Fox shared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Fox was a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) fan when she was growing up. You can imagine her excitement when she was cast as April O'Neil in the TMNT movie in 2014.

In the movie, Fox is finally able to explore a character that's quite far from the roles she's usually given. "I was always the mean girl," Fox says in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. But in TMNT, Fox channels her clever and funny side to play April.

3. Jennifer’s Body

Fox's favourite role she's ever played is Jennifer, the man-eating high school student in Jennifer's Body.

Long before the Me Too movement gained popularity in 2018, Jennifer's Body's writer, Diablo Cody, created a movie that bravely tackled the mistreatment of women, particularly young girls in a small town. Although the movie was harshly criticised, it is, no doubt, a must-watch feminist cult film.

We can all agree that this teen thriller was ahead of its time but was, unfortunately, "mismarketed" to young men, reveals Fox and Cody.

4. New Girl

What's wonderful about the TV series, New Girl, is that relationships between characters are never forced. So when Fox appeared as a guest star on season 5 as Reagan Lucas, the viewers didn't know that she would return as Nick Miller's love interest.

Not only did she take on the role of an attractive and smart businesswoman, but she was also playing a bisexual character, giving her a chance to finally play a character that represents her identity as an openly bisexual woman.

And no, her sexuality was not, in any way, used as an unnecessary punchline.

5. Jonah Hex

Fox is vocal about the movies she's loved and liked the least, and she definitely once considered Jonah Hex as the latter until recently when she tried to rewatch it again.

She plays the love interest of the lead character, but without the spark, so it seems, no matter how much the plot tries to squeeze them together. Jonah Hex might not live up to every DC fans' standards, but Fox wasn't entirely terrible in it. But fans wish it would've gotten better treatment.

Regardless of the criticism that's been thrown at Fox, the actress admits that her acting experiences have helped her grow. While having a conversation with Cody, she shares, "I've been on a total journey with it and I made it back to a place where nothing in my experience is a bad thing. It's always something that [led] me to the right direction".
