Big parties and extravagant celebrations may be out the window due to Covid-19 restrictions but that doesn't mean you can't welcome the new year in style

The new Omicron variant of Covid-19 may have put a dampener on some of our celebrations and plans but we should still look forward to celebrating and welcoming the new year according to safety protocols this week.

Although group sizes are restricted to five distinct guests per household or when dining out and larger celebrations have been repurposed to avoid crowding, there are still plenty of ways you can make memories with friends and family.

From fireworks in the heartlands to midnight superyacht dinner cruises, here are all the best ways you can welcome 2022 at midnight this Friday.

1. Watch fireworks in the heartlands

Fireworks are an integral part of every New Year celebration in many countries but this year in Singapore, our annual fireworks show at Marina Bay has been cancelled to avoid crowds from forming in lieu of the current Covid-19 situation.

However, the fireworks have been moved to the heartlands so everyone can enjoy them in a socially distanced way. You can see catch displays at Bedok, Bishan, Boon Lay, Geylang, Hougang, Jurong, Nanyang, Tampines, Tiong Bahru, Woodlands and Yew Tee.

2. Enjoy the Marina Bay light display

Even though we won’t be getting our fireworks at Marina Bay this year, the city is still set to light up with two light showcases.

The first, Shine a Light, will take place at The Promontory and will feature  60 moving light beams that will be pointed into the dark skies.

The second, Share The Moment, will project artwork by local students onto the facade of some of our most iconic landmarks. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, the Artscience Museum and the Merlion will be lit up so make sure you take a stroll along the waterfront promenade between December 1 and 31 to check it out.

Take note that Share The Moment will only run from December 26 to 31.

Most of the light displays will begin at 8 pm and end at 10.30 pm daily but do refer to the schedule on the day you plan to visit before heading down.

3. Go on a dinner cruise

With everyone out to catch a glimpse of fireworks or partying in groups of five at various restaurants, you may want to keep things more subdued while still honouring the celebration.

Why not try something unique this year by going on a superyacht as you welcome the new year. The Royal Albatross’ NYE Countdown Cruise, which boasts a six-course meal, a bottle of champagne for two and free-flow drinks, is the perfect option for you and your special someone.

The cruise will last well into midnight so you can welcome 2022 at sea with streamers, poppers and your fellow sailors.

If that is too late into the night for you, you can opt for their Sunset NYE Dinner which will run from 5 pm to 7.30 pm.

4. Pay a visit to the Philharmonic Orchestra

This New Year, The Philharmonic Orchestra will be holding their final concert for 2021 at the Victoria Concert Hall.

Led by conductor Lin Juan, the musical ensemble will perform classics by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and more at its New Year’s Eve 2022 Gala Concert. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the end of 2021.

You can also upgrade your ticket to receive a gift pack that will include a bottle of wine.

5. Enjoy a New Year's meal on The Orient Express

Considering that some of your usual dining establishments will no longer offer spectacular views of the fireworks as per previous years, how about trying a little more unique experience?

If you’re up for an adventure, why not hop on board The Orient Express, which is an immersive exhibition that takes place in a classic train. This New Year's Eve, in particular, enjoy a meal prepared by chef Bruno Menard in addition to your journey through time.

You will get to board the train on a reconstituted train platform and view showrooms as you are taken on a fascinating journey through the history of the Orient Express.

6. Binge-watch your favourite Netflix shows

If going out to celebrate the new year isn’t your style, there's no shame in curling up at home to binge-watch a fun movie or series that you can watch well past midnight.

For a fun and light watch, catch New Year’s Eve starring Zac Efron, Lea Michele, Robert De Niro and Jon Bon Jovi as it tells the intertwining love stories of various couples and singles. If you’re looking for something with a bit more action, why not check out Ghostbusters II which sees our favourite ghost catchers, Peter, Egon, Ray and Winston, return to our screens to defeat evil. And as always, there are plenty of Korean dramas to watch on platforms such as Netflix and Viu.
