Celebrate your accomplishments and those of the women around you this IWD by participating in these meaningful activities

The theme for International Women's Day (IWD) this year, Break The Bias, encourages women to go against social conventions while celebrating their accomplishments. Under this hashtag, we have seen a multitude of women share their experiences of breaking boundaries as well as speak up against gender inequality in various aspects of life.

Regardless of gender, IWD is a momentous occasion for all to commemorate the strides made in female empowerment and to reflect on what more can be done to achieve true gender parity.

Below, here are some empowering ways to specially commemorate this global movement in Singapore this year.

1. Visit the Women by Women street photography exhibition

Organised by Women in Street SG, Women by Women is a street photography exhibition celebrating the inspiring photography of female photographers in Singapore. This exhibition showcases the works of 13 female street photographers which serves to tell an impactful and meaningful story that seeks to inspire. The photography showcased at this exhibition represents the key sub-genres of street photography.

3. Volunteer at a female-focused charity

If you're looking to make a difference this IWD, consider donating to a female-focused charity of your choice. Some of the organisations you can donate to include Aidha, a charity organisation that helps domestic workers by teaching them important life skills and Women for Women International, which helps women survivors of war by providing them with essential resources. These charities advocate for women's rights, empowering disadvantaged women through their campaigns. They are always looking for volunteers to help out so volunteering your time is another meaningful way to spend IWD this year.

4. Break Free! with Aware

In celebration of International Women's Day, Aware will be organising a one-day-only mini-IWD festival. Titled, Break Free! with Aware, it will be held on March 19 at The Projector X and consists of three special events. Begin your night with a crash course in feminist history and theory at the Feminism For All workshop. After which, you can participate in the Trivia Night activity before concluding the night with a charity screening of the Singapore film Some Women. (Do note this film is only suitable for adults aged 21 and above.) There will also be a Q&A session with filmmaker Quen Wong and her documentary subjects after the screening. For this event, the team at Aware has also partnered up with bartender Kelly D’Cruz of The Secret Mermaid to bring you some bespoke cocktails that are sure to delight your tastebuds.

5. Dine at restaurants celebrating IWD

Celebrate IWD this week by dining at one of the restaurants that have whipped up special menus for this special occasion. One of which is Ichigo Ichie, a Japanese restaurant that has created an exclusive dining experience, showcasing the accomplishments of six women through food and art. In her element, the only female Japanese chef leading a restaurant in Singapore, Chef Akane Eno of Ichigo Ichie will serve you quality dishes made with ingredients sourced from three female suppliers. An array of intricately crafted Japanese pottery and lacquerware created by three Japanese female artisans will also be featured at the restaurant’s gallery space. The IWD special dining experience will be available from March 8 to 12. For more dining recommendations this IWD, click here.
