Get to know some fun facts about the breakout actress from the globally acclaimed South Korean Netflix series

The name Jung Ho-Yeon is all that anybody is ever talking about on social media right now after the premiere of the global Netflix phenomena Squid Game two weeks ago.

The up-and-coming actress stole the screen with her fan favourite performance as a mere pickpocketer named Kang Sae-byeok, or also known as player No. 067, in the series, and starstruck viewers everywhere are wondering where this breakthrough actress came from and who she is an emerging artiste in the business.

From being Korea's next top model to being friends with a Blackpink member, here are some things to know about the budding South Korean actress.

1. She began her career as a fashion model

Ever since she landed in third place in the fourth season of Korea's Next Top Model in 2013 at the age of 16, her modelling career has soared from there where she catwalked in runway shows at the Seoul Fashion Week before appearing in the international fashion scene with catwalks of brands from Chanel to Jacquemus. She was even selected by Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière as an exclusive model for the house’s fall/winter 2017 show for her first overseas runway gig.

2. She recorded her Squid Game audition clip during New York Fashion Week

Prior to making her acting debut on Squid Game, she joined Saram Entertainment agency in Korea as an actress while still wanting to maintain her modelling career at the onset of 2020. Despite her busy schedule as a fully-fledged fashion model, she decided to audition for Squid Game by sending in a self-taped video from New York, around the time of fashion week with the encouragement of her management.

3. She is dating actor Lee Donghwi

The actress has been dating actor Lee Donghwi—who is known for his role in the TV series Reply 1988, as well as other shows like Divorce Lawyer In Love, Entourage, and SF8—since January 2016. The couple has garnered attention for having a nine-year age gap between them, with Jung being 27 and Lee being 36.

Lee is an emerging singer too with his solo debut of his new single, 'Keep Your Head Up', and he is a member of the R&B group MSG Wannabe alongside Simon D, Lee Sang-yi and Kim Jung-min. The group was formed by MBC's reality show Hangout with Yoo

4. She gained a huge social media following overnight

Ever since the release of Squid Game on Netflix, the actress has gained much traction from fans on social media platforms like Instagram where her follower count jumped from 400,000 Instagram followers to over seven million followers and counting. With her feed offering an insider's glimpse into her daily life and career, and posts ranging from pictures of her latest modelling campaigns to a peek behind the scenes of Squid Game, fans could not be more excited to follow the social happenings of the actress.

5. She is close friends with Blackpink's Jennie

The rising actress is close friends with a member of one of the world's hottest girl groups as she was recently seen hanging out with Blackpink's Jennie on the set of Squid Game in an Instagram post. Apparently, Jennie had sent a coffee truck to the set to show support for her close friend. This eventually earned Jennie a place in the ending credits of the show! The friendship dates back to 2019 when Jung first appeared on Jennie's Instagram. They love to express support for each other on Instagram, whether it is for a professional project or to simply commemorate their friendship.
