The hit '90s show wouldn't be as successful without these memorable appearances

If you're a fan of sitcoms, then you've probably heard of—and binge-watched—Friends. Immensely popular in the '90s, it has become a certifiable cult classic, amassing plenty of fans born after it first premiered in 1994. While everyone likely has a "friend" they identify with (I'm a cross between Joey and Monica myself), the sitcom wouldn't have become such a hit without the supporting characters that added plenty of flavour and spice to the entire plotline. Here are some of the most important minor characters of one of our favourite sitcoms!

1. Gunther

James Michael Taylor brought the awkward but endearing Gunther to life on the Friends set. His comedic performance was always spot-on and his awkward crush on Rachel brought the show plenty of humour when drama was starting to heat up in later seasons. In the season finale, Gunther finally confesses his love to Rachel and though Rachel didn't return his feelings, they did part ways very sweetly, with an innocent kiss on the cheek.

The unfortunate passing of James Michael Taylor—who battled prostate cancer in 2018 up to 2021—brought many Friends fans out of the woodwork to show love and support for his family. A talented actor, he will surely be missed.

2. Janice

You'd know that laugh anywhere. Chandler's ex-girlfriend, Janice, may have been a little annoying, but there's no denying that her trademark "Oh my God!" made pop culture history. Portrayed by Maggie Wheeler, Janice Litman was as also sweet as could be, even showing support for her ex, Chandler, and his wife, Monica, in season 9 when they were trying to conceive.

Everyone loves Paul Rudd and his portrayal as Mike Hannigan, Phoebe's boyfriend turned fiancé, only cemented him as a fan favourite in Hollywood. He was practically a mainstay in the last two seasons too. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Rudd described his experience on set as "incredible" but also "a bit surreal and a bit of a blur in [his] memory".

Before debuting on Disney channel as Cody in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and then moving on to becoming Jughead in Riverdale, Cole Sprouse first portrayed Ross's son on Friends. As Ben Geller, Cole Sprouse acted as a bit of a rascal, adding plenty of opportunities for the friends to have funny misadventures. Interestingly enough, Sprouse only played Ben between seasons six to eight. As an infant, Ben Geller was portrayed by Michael Gunderson, and then as a toddler by twin brothers Charles Thomas Allen and John Christopher Allen.

Christina Applegate and Reese Witherspoon guest-starred on Friends as Rachel's sisters on various episodes. Their pettiness and miscommunications with Rachel herself prove a humorous (yet relatable) portrayal of sibling relationships, always culminating in a heartwarming ending of what sisterhood is all about.
