The clock is ticking but these men in their late 30s and early 40s prove that staying fit and healthy knows no age

While a lot of young Korean actors and performers have made us fall in love with K-pop and K-dramas recently—from cult-favourite BTS to Kim Seon-ho (Start-Up; Hometown Cha Cha Cha), Song Kang (Nevertheless; Navillera) and Jang Ki-yong (My Roommate is a Gumiho; Sweet & Sour), among others—there will always be a special place in our hearts for actors we have grown to love through the years.

Who can ever forget Gong Yoo in Coffee Prince, or Hyun Bin in Secret Garden? What about So Ji-sub in Memories of Bali and Ji Sung in Secret Love?

These debonair men who have hit their late 30s or early 40s are still as dashing as they were a decade or so ago. More than genes, impeccably poreless skin and proportioned physique, these oppas and ahjussis prove that they get better with age. Below we investigate how they manage to stay fit and look good from head to toe to this day.

In 2020, trainer to the stars Yoon Tae-sik, whose clients include Hyun Bin and Bae Suzy, released a video on Youtube for a magazine in Korea revealing how the Coffee Prince and the Guardian: The Lonely and Great God actor maintains his lean physique. The trainer spills that the actor goes to the gym almost every day, and twice if he’s preparing for a  role.

The routine is simple: 10- to 15-minute warm-ups, tailored exercise for about an hour and another hour of cardio thereafter. “I think he has a very good-looking chest-to-stomach line. He does upper, middle and lower chest exercises,” says Tae-sik. The 42-year-old actor spends roughly three hours exercising on a regular day to get fit and fab.

Tae-sik also shares that there was a time when Gong Yoo was on a strict diet plan, eating only chicken breast, sweet potatoes and vegetables. The disciplined actor once called his trainer to check if he could drink beer since he was eating beef. He was allowed but Gong Yoo voluntarily limited himself to 500ml of beer max for the night.

He tries to incorporate all the major nutrients in his meals, limits the use of condiments, naturally dislikes unhealthy food, and cooks for himself when he has the time.

2. Hyun Bin (born September 25, 1982)

Our Captain Ri turns 39 this year and we’ve seen how he has evolved through the years—from the skinny bachelor in Secret Garden to the buff North Korean soldier in Crash Landing On You.

When preparing for a role, Hyun Bin makes sure he internalises the character 360-degree. His trainer divulges that the actor worked really hard to attain his knight-in-shining-armour body in Crash Landing On You. The trick? Hyun Bin works out with an empty stomach. According to Yoon Tae-sik, who happens to be the coach of other stars like Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin does aerobic exercises twice a day, 5-6 times a week before eating anything in the morning. Quite a challenge for most of us who have been dreaming of breakfast the minute we close our eyes at night, right?

In the 2014 film The Fatal Encounter where Hyun Bin portrayed the character of King Jeong-jo, it was reported that he “tried to imagine how someone would have built up their body during the Joseon era,” which means he worked out without the use of gym equipment, utilising only the stairs, the floor and other resources he can find at home. The result? Newly developed back muscles worth flexing.

In a 2015 interview during the promotion of Oh My Venus, which stars So Ji-sub as a fitness coach to Hollywood stars, and Shin Min-a as a lawyer on the heavy side, Korean entertainment royalty So Ji-sub promised to show "a tighter and more muscular body". And so he did.

Two months prior to the show's premiere, the actor was reported to have lost 15 pounds by eliminating rice, sweet potatoes and salt from his diet. According to his agency 51k, he also intensified his fitness regimen, including three to four hours of training every day that aimed at building more muscles.

The 43-year-old actor is rumoured to have traded sinful treats like rice cakes for unappealing foods like onions in water. Tough, isn't it? However, the result is a head-turning, well-defined body that he showcased in a jaw-dropping tub scene in the 2015 romantic comedy series.

In 2019, So Ji-sub returns after a two-year hiatus, with another rom-com titled, My Secret Terrius. In an interview with an online platform, he shared that during the two years he was away from the limelight, he continued to look after his health by minimising alcohol and carbohydrates intake.

5. Ji Sung (born February 27, 1977)

In episode 5 of dark legal drama The Devil Judge, Ji Sung (who played the character of Kang Yo-han) flexed his beautifully toned body in a dramatic scene with Got7's Park Jin-young. The 44-year-old actor has been known for taking fitness seriously, so much so that he became part of the 2020 variety show Run, which required participants to run the full 42.195 km of the 36th Florence Marathon. Ji Sung completed the marathon in 4 hours, 9 minutes and 16 seconds.

In one of his past interviews, the actor revealed the struggles he underwent when he was younger because his father was against his choice to join the entertainment industry. This resulted in finding comfort in drinking alcohol, however, he soon realised that it was not the solution; rather, he found distraction and happiness in jogging. "It helped me wash away the trauma of the past which alcohol could not get rid of," he said.

Ji Sung jogs about 15 kilometres in the morning as his daily exercise, which probably explains his gorgeous figure to this day.
