With its myriad of genres, from xinyao to pop yeh yeh, Singapore’s music scene is storied and vibrant. As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations this year, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay presents a year‐long exploration of Singapore’s popular music through a series of live concerts and programmes.

On June 18 and 19, be sure to catch “Dick Lee & Omnitones featuring Third Degree”. Singer‐composer Dick Lee enters a new era of music making, working on new music with young musicians Omnitones and vocal trio Third Degree. This concert also showcases Lee’s repertoire through the decades. This July, watch as King of Swing Jeremy Monteiro takes to the stage with friends and music collaborators for “45 RPM – Jeremy’s Jazz Journal”, celebrating 45 years of his music career. And watch out for Charlie Lim, one of Singapore’s promising young artists, who will be performing with his band The Mothership alongside a to-be-revealed line-up on September 16.

Artist Shubigi Rao and curator Ute Meta Bauer form the first women‐led team to represent Singapore at the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (Biennale Arte 2022). The presentation of Pulp III: A Short Biography of the Banished Book marks the midpoint of Rao’s 10‐year project, Pulp, which explores the history of book destruction and its impact on the future of knowledge. The exhibition created for the Singapore Pavilion takes the form of a book, a film and a paper maze, exploring topics such as endangered languages, public and alternative libraries, as well as regional print communities in historic print centres such as Venice and Singapore. There will be a presentation of the exhibition in Singapore next year.

3. Singapore International Festival of the Arts

Known for its dynamic creation and presentation of Singaporean and international works, the annual Singapore International Festival of Arts returns with a new festival director. Natalie Hennedige, the artistic director of contemporary performance company Cake, will helm three editions until 2024. With the guiding title of The Anatomy of Performance, a recurring theme throughout her three‐year arc, Hennedige unpacks the idea of what “performance” encompasses, within physical and virtual spaces, and across theatre, music, dance, film and visual arts. The subtitle changes each year; this year’s edition, which runs from May 20 to June 5, focuses on Ritual. It will look at our common experiences through the lenses of time, artefacts or symbolic objects, and clothing, as well as gestures or significant actions.
