Have a look at what went down during the Couture Council Luncheon 2021 in New York

On September 22, 2021, the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT (MFIT) hosted its Couture Council Luncheon honouring Wes Gordon, Carolina Herrera’s creative director. Held at Cipriani South Street in New York, it gave Gordon the 2021 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion. The annual event benefits MFIT, New York’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the art of fashion and open to the public free of charge.

During her opening remarks, FIT President Dr Joyce F Brown raised her glass to the re-emergence of the fashion industry and celebrated the 40th anniversary of Carolina Herrera. About Gordon, she said his “vibrant, bold and dramatic [designs] are themselves celebrations, filled with exuberance and joy... and carry on the timeless elegance and sophistication that made the Carolina Herrera line a classic American mainstay”.

As supermodel Shanina Shaik presented the award to Gordon, she said she has “always felt most confident, beautiful and fabulous in Carolina Herrera”. Upon being introduced by MFIT director and chief curator, Dr Valerie Steele, Gordon accepted the award and thanked the brave women in his life who had inspired and supported him, including his mother, Emilie Rubinfeld (luncheon co-chair, president of Carolina Herrera), his clients and friends and Carolina Herrera herself. He said of Herrera, “To the queen of New York. The empress of elegance. I dedicate this award to you. I have only been the caretaker of the magical house you have built.”

Notable attendees were Patricia Lansing, Shaik, Georgina Bloomberg, Martha Stewart, Indre Rockefeller, Stacey Bendet Eisner, Nicole Miller, Julie Macklowe, Jean Shafiroff, Ramy Brook, Gillian Hearst, B Michael, Young Emperors, Meredith Marks and Fe Fendi, among others.

Due to strict Covid-19 restrictions, the guest list was slashed in half. The good news is that the event raised US$700,000 for the FIT Museum.
