Learn the art of entertaining at home from style maven, Ching Cruz, who shares tips on throwing a bash—be it an intimate lunch, a lavish dinner or a themed party

What are the things to consider when entertaining at home?

When entertaining at home, a good host should be relaxed and able to enjoy the meal as well even while making sure all of the guests’ senses are touched and that they are as satisfied. All aspects are crucial—the dishes served to the drinks poured, the impeccable service, entertainment, ambience and the company.

Any tips on creating a guest list? On making the seat or table plan?

I invite happy and positive people who I think will get along well with each other. I like having a vibrant and gregarious table so I seat my guests who are normally fun and lively all together for hilarious banter and animated discussions.

What inspires you?

I draw inspiration from my travels and art, and conjure up themes based on these. For instance, I once hosted a romantic yet casual Aixen-Provence-themed party inspired by the former capital of Provence, which is a two-hour train ride away from Paris. It was held in our pocket garden and I used floral tablecloths and fresh flowers in the colours that reminisce this part of France.

How do you make entertaining at home extraordinary?

The key is to always make sure my guests are comfortable and well taken care of. They should feel at home so I avoid being stuffy and artificial at all costs.

How do you plan the menu?

I think of ingredients that are fresh and in season. I always check my guests’ dietary restrictions so I would have something suitable for their diet.

What’s the most memorable event that you hosted at home?

I try to make all of my events memorable whether it’s simple or grand. I create the event based on the variety of my guests. For example, live music for those who love to dance, authentic Spanish paella for those who love to eat and fabulous wines for those who love to drink. I host all my dinners at home to keep them personal, where I can pour all my love and hospitality into planning and hosting the event.
