Family reunion dinners and house visits are allowed this Chinese New Year

You can now plan your reunion dinners with peace of mind this Chinese New Year. An announcement by the National Unity Ministry (Kementerian Perpaduan Negara or KPN) on January 19 revealed the SOPs regarding the celebrations permitted this year. In a Facebook post, KPN revealed that family reunion dinners on January 31 and house visits between January 31 and February 15 are permitted. Although no specific mention was made regarding the maximum number of guests at the reunion dinner, National Unity minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique said that these dinners are usually attended by family members and close relatives.

Additionally, lion, dragon and tiger dances may be performed subject to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry's SOPs for the creative industry. Prayers at temples on February 1 and 2 are also permitted, along with special prayers for the Hokkien community on February 8 to 9 , and Chap Goh Mei on February 15. Devotees are required to adhere to these SOPs.

However, Chinese New Year open houses are not permitted. Nevertheless, Chinese New Year receptions or banquets may be held for only a limited number of fully vaccinated guests, up to just 50 per cent of the venue capacity. Guests are required to have their temperatures checked and scan their attendance using the MySejahtera app.
