If you've been missing Japan's therapeutic onsen, you can now soak your worries away in a traditional hot bath right here in Kuala Lumpur

Press pause. You will find it hard not to do that when you're at Urban Retreat Onsen Spa, a winner of World Luxury Spa Awards 2019 tucked away in Mont Kiara. With an interior of muted tones and wood, the space is a veritable invitation to leave the outside world behind and just relax.

Offering a range of massages and pampering rituals, its most unique feature, however, is the onsen. The bathtub is specially crafted from Hinoki wood, revered in Japan for its stress-relieving properties. The recreation of this beloved Japanese pastime extends even to the bath salt, extracted directly from Japan's hot springs.

"Onsen spas are surprisingly popular in neighbouring countries like Singapore and Thailand. Since there wasn’t an onsen spa in Malaysia, we decided to bring the onsen culture to Malaysia," says spa director Brigitte Lu.

The first private onsen in the country features a modern contemporary design, using imported pines and local premium wood. The goal is to replicate as authentic an experience as you would find in Japan. "All fixtures in the onsen room—tubs, shower taps, bucket and stool—were imported from Japan. We worked closely with our Japanese consultants on the details," notes Lu.

The onsen journey begins with selecting the bath mineral of your choice. There are three options here: Kirei that promotes soft and supple skin; Iyashi that eases muscle tension and improves blood circulation; and Zen for better sleep.

"The minerals are sourced all over Japan," reveals Lu. "These minerals are produced by extracting and crystallising the ingredients at the actual hot spring and processed using technology designated as an important intangible folk cultural property of Japan."

The next thing to do is to choose the level of water temperature you're most comfortable with and you're all set for an hour of total bliss

Onsen promotes general wellbeing. It reduces stress, increases blood circulation, and even boosts skin radiance.

For the ultimate pampering, add a body scrub and a massage to your onsen experience. The Signature Scrub, for instance, is designed to promote better sleep.

"The other name for it is Sleep Scrub. We spent more than six months perfecting the technique that involves a massage as well as assists in natural lymphatic drainage and stimulates body's natural detoxification process," says Lu.

Simply put, it's cleansing and relaxation in one blissful package.

For massage, go for the Timeless Urutan Malaysia, which is exclusive to this Urban Retreat Onsen Spa. What makes it unique is that it combines various local techniques—traditional Malay massage, Chinese acupressure, Indian champissage (head massage) and other heritage techniques—for a massage that effectively provides deep relief and soothes strained muscles.

"It's our signature massage at Urban Retreat Onsen and can only be performed by a senior therapist. We believe it has the potential to be on par with Balinese or Thai massage," says Lu.

Having just experienced the expert hands of its therapist, I couldn't help but to agree with this sentiment.
