Plan ahead and put together a hamper for yourself to upgrade your mandatory hotel stay when you return to Hong Kong

With any luck, Hong Kong will soon be completely quarantine-free for those arriving in the city (hey, hope springs eternal, right?) and travelling will once again be easy for “Asia’s World City”.

To be fair, let’s take a moment to acknowledge that the current three days in hotel quarantine followed by four days of medical surveillance out of quarantine is already significantly better than the previous nightmare- and anxiety-inducing 21 days. Having said that, three days in the same space, alone or with others, is still a struggle and you can’t just work remotely or watch Netflix all day to distract yourself from the confinement.

Instead, use the three days to take good care of your well-being, so when you step out into the bustling city again you’ll be looking and feeling your best.

Before you leave for your trip, put together a self-care kit and pack everything in a small suitcase for a friend or family member to bring to the hotel you’ll be spending quarantine in. When you have to spend upwards of 72 hours in one space, every creature comfort will help elevate your stay.

Things from home

Unless you’re Robert Downey Jr, maybe don’t furnish your temporary digs with your favourite chair. But your everyday mug, a set of your own cutlery, and the shawl you like to be wrapped in while you get lost in a good book can bring personal touches to an otherwise very bland space and make you feel less isolated to have that connection to home.

Also, there’s something very comforting about going to sleep inhaling familiar scents, so pack a couple of pillowcases in your quarantine suitcase and use those instead of the hotel’s own. Depending on how sensitive your skin is, it’s good for avoiding a reaction to the hotel’s detergent as well.

Heaven scent

Let’s get this out of the way: do not bring scented candles. You don’t want to accidentally set off the hotel smoke alarm! However, a reed or electronic diffuser to fill your room with a fragrance you enjoy can add an element of luxury to your stay.

Not a fan of bringing reeds or essential oils you’d have to pack up again after just three days? Maybe a home fragrance plug-in instead, or a bowl of potpourri to banish that hotel smell of too many previous occupants.

Bring your own snacks.

Wherever you’re staying for your quarantine, chances are you’ll encounter at least one meal you’re not going to be fond of. So pack some snacks, ask your friend to add in some delicious cheeses right before bringing that suitcase over, and maybe a bottle of wine so you have things you like to nibble on. Or if you really don’t like a meal the hotel sends up, make your own little charcuterie board.

A few choice gadgets

Obviously you don’t want to bring in your whole entertainment system, but a rechargeable speaker for background music, a cordless jump rope to get in some daily exercise (without driving your neighbours mad), or a streaming device like a Google Chromecast so you can watch your favourite shows or have a movie night on the hotel’s TV instead of your laptop could come in useful.

If you’re in quarantine with other people, bring along a multi-port USB charger. You don’t want to be fighting over one port when someone’s mobile or Kindle is down to its last 10 percent. A portable humidifier to keep the hotel air conditioning from zapping hydration from you skin would also be a good idea.

Bring the spa to you

In our daily lives it’s easy to sideline masks and at-home treatments because, “who has the time?” Well, now you have masses of time, so you might as well get in a little pampering.

Just because you’re in quarantine doesn’t mean you want to skimp on skincare. After all, skincare is self-care, and humans crave routine so it’ll help with your mental health as well. So stick with your cleanser, serum and moisturiser in the morning and evening, and SPF during the day if your room happens to get a lot of sun. For an added boost, use a mask in the evenings after you cleanse: a detoxing clay mask on day one, nourishing and hydrating mask on day two, and firming or rejuvenating mask on day three in anticipation of going back out into the world looking refreshed and radiant.

If you’re lucky enough to be at a hotel with a bathtub, pack a bath bomb to use over a few days, a couple of electronic tealight candles, and a luxurious body scrub. While you’re at it, throw in a hair mask and a copy of Tatler to really make a spa day of it. Oh, and don’t forget your silkiest or softest bathrobe to lounge around in.
