However, despite its striking aesthetics and technical prowess, the Defy, like many other mechanical watches at the time, suffered due to the quartz crisis, when timepieces powered by quartz movements took over. It took several years for the Swiss luxury watch to recover and for the demand for innovative luxury watches to return and grow. But it did, and in the mid-2000s, Zenith revived the Defy line to cater to this demand. The introduction of models like the Defy Classic and Defy Extreme marked a significant turning point, as these watches embraced bold designs and advanced materials.
In 2017, under the leadership of then-CEO Julien Tornare, Zenith sought to redefine the Defy collection further. This era saw the launch of the Defy El Primero 21, which featured an unprecedented chronograph capable of measuring time down to 1/100th of a second. The watch’s innovative movement was a testament to Zenith’s commitment to precision and performance, solidifying the Defy’s reputation as a leader in high-frequency timekeeping.

Then, in 2022, the collection grew further with the Defy Skyline, paying homage to its predecessors while embracing contemporary urban aesthetics. Inspired by the night sky over bustling cityscapes, these watches feature elegantly engraved star motifs on sunburst dials. The line includes various models powered by Zenith’s in-house El Primero movements, showcasing three-hand, tourbillon and chronograph configurations.
Last year, the brand launched the Defy Skyline Lucky Red Limited Edition watches to commemorate Chinese Valentine’s Day. Made in a versatile 36 mm stainless steel case that if suitable for both men and women, the watch features a striking red dial with diamond-set hour markers and 52 brilliant-cut diamonds set on the bezel.

Some of the 2024 additions include the Defy Skyline Chronograph, featuring a 42 mm stainless steel case with a sky-patterned dial in either metallic black, blue or silver and with the traditional El Primero dial configuration. Similar to the Defy Skyline automatic model and its skeleton counterpart, this timepiece also offers the 1/10th of a second function, in the form of a 1/10th of a second chronograph.
Adding another layer of sophistication to the collection is the Defy Skyline Tourbillon that launched earlier this year, which showcases Zenith’s mastery in haute horlogerie. Available in 41 mm stainless steel with a blue sunray dial or 41 mm black ceramic with a matching black sunray dial, this watch features an intricate tourbillon mechanism visible through its skeletonised dial, illustrating both technical complexity and aesthetic elegance.

For those that prefer more rough and tough timepieces, the Defy Extreme series represents Zenith’s most rugged offerings. Also launched earlier this year, the Defy Extreme Diver is designed for adventurers who demand durability without sacrificing style. Made in a highly resistant 42.5 mm angular titanium case equipped with a helium escape valve for saturation diving, this watch is particularly noteworthy for its professional-grade water resistance and robust construction, making it an ideal companion for underwater exploration.
More recently, this December Zenith expanded the collection with the new Defy Extreme Jungle, a limited-edition timepiece that encapsulates the spirit of exploration and adventure. It is the third and final installment in a series of chronographs designed for extreme environments, following the successful Desert and Glacier editions. Limited to just 50 pieces, the Defy Extreme Jungle is crafted in a light yet tough 45 mm brushed titanium case and draws inspiration from the vibrant and enigmatic jungle, showcased in its dodecagonal bezel and pusher protectors made from tiger’s eye, paired with an open sapphire dial tinted in green with three counters applied with a black and orange tiger-inspired pattern.
As Zenith continues to innovate within this iconic collection, it is clear that the brand remains committed to honouring its rich heritage while embracing future possibilities. The journey of the Defy is not just a story of watches; it is a testament to Zenith’s commitment to innovation and excellence in craftsmanship.
