Vacheron Constantin continues to expand its women’s collection with breathtaking Égérie timepieces that combine the maison’s watchmaking expertise and artistic know-how

When it comes to traditional handcrafts and age-old art forms, utmost patience and a painstaking attention to detail are required. These days, instant gratification is the norm in society, making the need to preserve such rare, time-consuming artistic crafts more apparent, along with a growing appreciation for them.

As one of the oldest watch manufactures in the world, Vacheron Constantin has maintained decorative craftsmanship as an integral part of its identity and expertise since the early 19th century. This is often most apparent in its watches for women, with whom the brand has had a longstanding affinity, thanks to its commitment to designing timepieces specifically for women rather than just variations of men’s models. Even some of the brand’s earliest pocket watches were made for women, with elaborate decorations in addition to useful complications.

Vacheron Constantin’s knack for knowing what women want in a watch still rings true today, as evidenced in the latest Égérie Creative Edition timepiece. The design of this new addition to the maison’s extensive ladies’ collection was inspired by a traditional handcraft originating outside the world of watchmaking: Burano lace.

Tracing all the way back to 1500, the art of Burano lace-making originated on the small Italian island of Burano, close to Venice. The intricate craft is widely recognised as one of the most ornate laces in the world. It consists of a very fine mesh with dainty floral motifs handcrafted with a needlepoint stitch on a cloth-stuffed cylindrical cushion known as a tombolo. Burano lace-making has been passed down from generation to generation, and is still practiced in Burano today.

As lovers and perpetuators of such fine crafts and savoir faire, Vacheron Constantin created the new Égérie Creative edition watch as an homage to Burano lace. Just as the lace-makers of Burano dedicate themselves to achieving the most delicate creations, the master artisans at Vacheron Constantin too carry out each of their crafts with passion, incorporating them into this feminine and artful timepiece.

In fact, the Égérie Creative edition watch features four different artistic crafts: tapisserie, engraving, enamelling and gem-setting—each executed by a master craftsman who is an expert in the respective technique. These come together to create an enthralling lace-like pattern on the dial, shimmering with diamonds.

The first of these four crafts is tapisserie, which is done by the maison’s master guillocheur in a method passed down from an ancient decorative technique, with a machine from the early 20th century. This process involves superimposing five elements with precision, and the pleated tapisserie motif is produced on a silver base to enhance the black enamel.

When applying enamel, it takes real expertise to be able to maintain the balance of transparency and opaqueness of the complex material. For this Égérie Creative Edition, the master enameller demonstrates masterful skill particularly in the moon phase window, where a mother-of-pearl night star peeks through a plique-à-jour enamel cloud. Plique-à-jour, which translates to “open to light” in English, is an enamelling technique that creates a stained glass effect, and this enamel cloud measures just 0.27mm thick—a feat and a first time in the history of the maison.

When it comes to the engraving on the dial, the master engraver not only showcases his or her skill in shaping the form of the flowers and flat areas, but also expresses creativity on the other areas left up to the engraver. The threads linking the motifs were engraved according to the engraver's wishes, making each timepiece unique.

Further, the master engraver succeeds in engraving the lace pattern on an extremely delicate and thin applique that is no thicker than an eyelash. It is an impressive feat requiring a lot of finesse as this component cannot be held between the fingers without bending it.

Lastly, the master gem-setter has the task of putting the final touch on the dial, embellishing it with 250 brilliant-cut diamonds on the lace motif, in addition to 292 more on the case and crown.

To complement this delicate and sophisticated work of art that is the Égérie Creative Edition, the watch is paired with a black satin-effect calfskin strap featuring a buckle set with 21 diamonds. With the simple touch of a button, this strap can easily be switched out for an alternative one in black Missisippiensis alligator leather.

Alongside the Égérie Creative Edition, Vacheron Constantin has also introduced three new feminine, pink gold moon phase timepieces to the Égérie collection: Égérie moon phase jewellery, Égérie moon phase diamond-paved and Egérie moon phase.

Arguably the most glamorous and certainly the shiniest of the three, the Égérie moon phase jewellery watch is fully set with a whopping 1,377 diamonds totalling 12.35 carats. In the moon phase window, mother-of-pearl moons are subtly sheathed by translucent metallic sapphire crystal clouds.

On the Égérie moon phase diamond-paved watch, the diamond-set and case version are identical to that of the Égérie moon phase jewellery watch, but are instead paired with an interchangeable strap in alligator or satin.

Finally, on the Egérie moon phase watch, a 37mm pink gold case is encircled with 58 diamonds, while its moon phase window displaying gold moons behind mother-of-pearl clouds is framed with 36 diamonds. This timepiece comes with a flowing pink gold bracelet with a mesh-type effect that provides a comfortable ‘second skin’ fit around the wrist.

Certainly, the amazing displays of craftsmanship and watchmaking in these novelties show Vacheron Constantin’s steadfast dedication to women in crafting precious timepieces that they truly desire. These timepieces are now available in Vacheron Constantin's boutiques in ION Orchard (2 Orchard Turn #02-07, ION Orchard) and Marina Bay Sands (The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, 2 Bayfront Avenue #B2M-238).
